Sound Recording Cataloging Librarian, Indiana University Bloomington, Bloomington, IN


The Sound Recordings Cataloging Librarian will develop and maintain local policies and procedures for cataloging audiovisual materials, both physical and digital, in the William and Gayle Cook music library. Cook Music Library supports musical performance, teaching, learning, and research on the Bloomington campus of Indiana University, primarily in the Jacobs School of Music, a world-renowned center of musical excellence. The library provides collections, services, and environments that lead to intellectual discovery, growth, and artistry.
 Materials to be cataloged include, but are not limited to, compact discs, LPs, reel-to-reel tapes, cassettes, digital audio tapes, video cassettes, DVDs, video laser discs, transcription discs, and streaming audio and video. The successful candidate will collaborate with their colleagues in the music library and Jacobs School of Music to establish strategies, policies, procedures, and best practices for the long-term access, management, and preservation of music library audiovisual materials in all their forms. They may also initiate or participate in the grant-writing process for specific projects. Additionally, they will participate in the ongoing process of providing access to the content produced by the Media Digitization and Preservation Initiative (, a university-wide digitization and preservation project that included audio and video materials from the music library. The position reports to the Head of Music Library Cataloging.

Working closely with librarians and staff in the music library, the Sound Recordings Cataloging Librarian will:

  • Participate in the process of cataloging, preserving, and archiving audiovisual materials for the music library and provide original cataloging for Indiana University Jacobs School of Music performance recordings and videos.
  • Provide original cataloging of sound recordings and videos in all formats, including compact discs, LPs, reel-to-reel tapes, cassettes, digital audio tapes, streaming audio and video, video cassettes, DVDs, and video laser discs.
  • Provide catalog access for audiovisual materials as part of IU’s Media Digitization and Preservation Initiative. 
  • Participate in various cooperative cataloging projects as necessary: for example, create original bibliographic records for streaming performances of the Berlin Philharmonic.
  • Provide original cataloging of other formats, including books, scores, manuscripts, dissertations, and other monographic materials as needed.
  • Supervise one full-time paraprofessional staff member and several part-time student assistants in sound recording cataloging.
  • Collaborate with the immediate supervisor and the department head to plan and implement policies and procedures for the operation of Music Technical Services.
  • Remain current with the constantly changing body of music cataloging rules and interpretations, including AACR2, RDA, MARC 21, LCSH, and LC classification.
  • Participate in national cooperative cataloging initiatives: OCLC National Level Enhance, PCC/BIBCO and the NACO Music Project.
  • Participate in the appropriate music cataloging forums at the national, regional, and local levels.
  • Engage in professional development opportunities–memberships, conferences, training, and certification–to stay current on new programs, standards, and developments in music librarianship.
  • Represent the university in matters concerning music librarianship at the local, national, and international levels.
  •  Participate in meetings and activities of professional music library-related groups, including but not limited to the music library Administrative Committee, the music library staff, and the IU Cataloging Congress. 
  • Promote the Libraries’ culture of diversity and inclusion, and support the values outlined in  Indiana University Bloomington’s Campus Strategic Plan ( plan/) and the Libraries’ Diversity Strategic Plan ( strategic-plan-20162017pdf). 


  • ALA-accredited graduate degree in library or information science; or an advanced degree in a relevant discipline and appropriate experience in an academic setting will also be considered. 
  • Three years of previous music library experience
  • Previous sound recording cataloging experience using AACR2, RDA, OCLC, MARC format for music materials, and MARC authorities format
  • Previous experience with an online library catalog
  • Bibliographic knowledge of one or more Western European languages in addition to English
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills
  • Good organization skills and an aptitude for analytical and detailed work
  • Ability to work independently and in a group
  • Understanding and valuing diversity and the importance of inclusion as demonstrated through a commitment to apply and incorporate the differences, complexities, and opportunities that diversity brings to an organization
  • Ability to meet the requirements of a tenure-track position at the IU Libraries (…)


  • Bachelor’s degree in Music 
  • Supervisory experience
  • Experience in the use of OCLC Connexion and an integrated library system
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current topics about music cataloging procedures
  • Awareness of current and developing music cataloging and metadata standards and practices
