The County Archives program is a section of the Assessor/Recorder/Clerk in San Diego County and formally opened to the public in February 2020. Our primary mission is to serve as the central repository for the permanent retention of the official records of the Recorder/Clerk’s office. We facilitate access to these critical public records through the arrangement, description, management and preservation of these records, pursuant to sections 27300(a), 27231, and 66466(e) of the Government Code. Our holdings include approximately 600 cubic ft. of official and historic vital records, over 170,000 sheets of maps, and a microfilm collection with more than 100,000 rolls from across County departments. In addition, the Archives provides departmental records management services and serves as an information resource to facilitate research.
Job Purpose
The Student Intern will be paired with an Archivist mentor and will help enhance the discovery and use of collections at the County Archives through the arrangement, description and management of records as per archival standards.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
The student internship program at the San Diego County Archives provides an opportunity for students to apply theoretical concepts learned in the classroom in a practical setting. The intern will assist with performing a survey and developing an inventory of collections; the arrangement, description and organization of records; indexing; stabilization and preservation efforts; and creating a finding aid. Each student intern will be paired with an Archivist, who will serve as a mentor and supervise their projects. The intern will gain experience working with archival materials in various formats and will work independently within a team setting. Daily duties include:
- Review materials and develop processing plan
- Process arrange and describe archival records
- Re-folder and rehouse records
- Create EAD and DACS compliant finding aid(s)
- Create metadata records
Required Qualifications
Applicants must be full-time students in the SLIS program at the time of their internship. Student workers must be currently enrolled in at least 6 semester/9 quarter units, continue to be full-time students and maintain at least a 2.0 semester/quarter grade point average (GPA). Students may work a maximum of 20 hours per week while school is in session. Student worker positions/employment work assignments must correspond to student’s declared degree. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Proficiency in current office software (spreadsheets, word processing, etc.)
- Ability to pay close attention to detail and produce high-quality work

Preferred Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Coursework in archives
Working Conditions
- Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 50lbs
- Must be able to maneuver a fully loaded book cart up to 300 lbs
- Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment
Salary
$16.29 to $19.79. Hourly rates are based on the level of education completed. Students are hired on a temporary basis, are paid at an hourly rate, and do not receive benefits.
Hours
Up to 20 hours/week. Monday-Friday, 8am to 5pm
