The STEM Instruction Librarian will develop, implement, assess and continuously improve an innovative and engaging program of learning opportunities and resources that enhance WPI’s distinctively interdisciplinary and purpose-driven STEM curriculum, by working with our faculty to introduce, teach, mentor, and elevate the information literacy skills of our undergraduate and graduate STEM students.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Reporting directly to the Associate Director for Library Academic Strategies, working as a member of a collaborative team of librarians, and in consultation with WPI faculty and other professionals, the STEM Librarian will:

Design, develop, facilitate, deliver, and assess foundational, advanced level, and course-specific/curriculum-integrated instruction sessions and information literacy classes and workshops – both in-person and online – in STEM areas.
Provide online and in-person research assistance and consultations for undergraduate students in STEM disciplines, including senior-level STEM MQP students; and for graduate students in STEM disciplines.
Develop online resources using a variety of online learning platforms, to support research and curricular needs of students in STEM and related disciplines.
Initiate and foster congenial and collaborative working relationships with students and teaching faculty to ensure ongoing dialogue about the evolving learning and research needs of the WPI STEM community and maintain familiarity with current and emerging approaches to scientific/engineering education.
Help develop, implement, report and assess undergraduate information literacy instruction for project-based learning at all levels, and in all formats; and participate in providing research consultations and reference services.
Demonstrate awareness and understanding of the needs of a diverse student population through inclusive course materials and teaching strategies.
Collaborate on initiatives, projects, experiments, and innovations that advance the Library’s contributions to teaching and learning programs. These may include the use of new instructional technologies and/or developing co-curricular and certificate-based paths for students to attain research and information skills.
Participate in undergraduate and graduate engagement and orientation initiatives.
Participate in and contribute to library and WPI committees, initiatives, and goals, including the library’s and the university’s goals regarding equity, inclusion, and sustainability.
Engage in and contribute to the profession through continuing learning, service, research, presentations, or professional communications.
Perform other duties as assigned to meet department, library, and university goals and objectives. Some evening and weekend work may be possible; some remote work may be possible.

Required Knowledge, Experience, and Abilities:

ALA-accredited graduate degree or equivalent graduate degree or experience.
Undergraduate or graduate degree in a STEM field, or at least two years’ professional work experience as a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics librarian or information specialist.
Demonstrated knowledge of key issues, emerging pedagogy trends, best practices, and concepts used in information and digital literacy.
Ability to work in a diverse community in a manner that is respectful, empathetic, and responsive to different needs and cultures.
An understanding of the current research, information sources and scholarly trends in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and of emerging issues and technologies in science librarianship.
Flexibility, creativity and a willingness to take risks and experiment with new methods.
Strong oral and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, and presentation skills.
Demonstrated ability to plan, document, and complete projects.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience teaching information literacy skills and/or providing reference services in an academic library.
Demonstrated ability to plan, design, implement, and assess STEM-specific library services for diverse populations.
Experience with designing, promoting, and integrating library services and resources to support the research lifecycle in STEM disciplines (e.g., data services).
