Job Description:
Arader Galleries is hiring a Rare Book Cataloger to catalog 16th-19th century atlases, natural history books, and color-plate books.
Position Duties:
- Catalog 16th-19th century atlases, natural history books, and color-plate books.
- Research bibliography, provenance, and historical context.
- Write clear, accurate catalog descriptions.
- Maintain bibliographic and collection records.
- Handle rare materials carefully, following preservation guidelines.
Qualifications:
- Knowledge of library services and library science, including principles of rare book cataloging and collection management
- Ability to apply LCSH and other controlled vocabularies for accurate subject access
- Experience with metadata standards and schemas for bibliographic and archival description
- Strong research skills for bibliographic verification, provenance investigation, and historical context analysis
- Bachelor’s or master’s in LIS, Archival Studies, Book History, Art History, or related (MLIS or equivalent preferred)
- Familiarity with integrated library systems or collection management databases, and comfort with basic digital tools
- Excellent written communication, attention to detail, clear descriptions for specialist and non-specialist audiences
- Demonstrated interest in rare books, maps, prints, and the history of printing, cartography, or natural history; special collections or gallery experience a plus
- Ability to work carefully with delicate materials, follow preservation guidelines, and collaborate with a small, focused team
Hours & Compensation:
Salary Range: $65,000-$150,000
