Description:
The Town of Bourne, an affirmative action, equal opportunity employer, seeks a qualified candidate for a Library Assistant position. The Library Assistant work includes checking library materials in to and out from the library, processing inter-library loans, searching for library materials for patrons, and shelving library materials, processing new library materials, entering material records into the library database, assisting in the planning, promotion, and supervision of events and activities for patrons of all ages; all other work as assigned.
Position Duties:
- Provides excellent customer service including greeting and welcoming visitors to the library.
- Performs functions related to circulation control: checkouts, check-ins, inquiries, renewals, reserves, data entry, and borrower registration.
- Conducts serials and acquisition ordering, verification, system input and processing. May locate, adapt and create MARC records in the computer system for items being processed.
- Provides elementary descriptive cataloging using the Library’s automated bibliographic database.
- Provides basic reference and readers advisory service, referring patrons to other library staff when necessary.
- Assists with organizing, maintaining and displaying print and non-print library materials for patrons of all ages.
- Plans, implements and supervises programs for children, teens, and/or adults; coordinates with specialists, local organizations and educational groups.
- Designs promotional materials for both print and digital platforms.
- Processes inter-library loan requests, coordinates with other libraries to receive or provide books and materials as requested.
- Shelves library materials by returning them to their proper location in the library.
- Assists library patrons with locating library materials either using the online catalog or within the library stacks.
- Answers the phone, directs calls and takes complete messages
- Performs functions related to technical services functions – covering physical materials, applying property labels, and data entry into library network database.
Qualifications:
- High School diploma or equivalent
- At least one (1) years of library experience, preferably in an automated circulation environment
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office or Google Suite
- In exceptional instances, specialized education training and/or experience may be substituted for part or all of the required elements.
Hours and Compensation:
- 15 hrs/week; Monday, Wednesday, & Saturday 9:00 am to 2:00 pm
- $24.67-$25.79/hr
