Archival Research Assistant, Houghton Library, (Cambridge, MA)

Description

Dr. Lona Bailey, an author and researcher specializing in Golden Age Hollywood history and biography, is seeking a research assistant for a short-term archival research assignment at Houghton Library at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

The researcher will examine a small, predetermined selection of materials from the Elliot Martin Papers (MS Thr 1735) relating to actress Lana Turner, her longtime companion Carmen Lopez Cruz, and an unpublished project developed by Martin in the late 1990s.

This is a targeted assignment rather than a survey of the entire collection. Specific boxes and folders have already been identified for examination.

Responsibilities

Review selected archival correspondence and project files; identify potentially relevant names, documents, manuscripts, notes, proposals, and correspondence; photograph relevant materials when permitted by Houghton Library; maintain the original order of archival materials; and provide a brief research log describing materials examined and potentially significant findings.

Qualifications

Strong attention to detail and the ability to work independently are essential. Previous experience with archival research, special collections, historical research, or primary-source materials is preferred. Students or recent graduates in library and information science, archives management, history, film/media studies, American studies, or related fields are encouraged to apply. Previous experience conducting research at Houghton Library is a plus but is not required.

Hours and Compensation

Status: Temporary, short-term assignment. Approximately 3–4 hours initially, with the possibility of additional paid research depending upon the results of the initial visit.

Location: Houghton Library, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Compensation: $35/hour.
