The Youth and Teen Services Librarian is responsible for providing inclusive and welcoming library services, programming, and outreach for youth populations and their caregivers. This position reports directly to the Youth & Teen Services Librarian Department Head and Library Director.

Position Duties:
- Collaborates with the Youth & Teen Services Librarian Department Head to plan and present programs and activities for diverse age groups to encourage development, reading, and stimulate use of the library, including but not limited to weekly Storytime, summer reading programs, school visits, outreach programs, and special events.
- Provide readers’ advisory, answer reference questions, promote library events, and engage with children, teens, and parents in the library.
- Supports collection development by keeping the department materials organized, shelf reading, helping with weeding, and reviewing materials for damage or replacement. May participate in the selection of juvenile materials as assigned.
- Ensure spaces in the children’s and teen areas are tidy at all times.
- Promote materials in children and teen collections, including creating book displays and rotating books on display.
- Maintaining accurate youth department statistics.
- Takes into consideration the diverse representation within the community and supports programming reflective and inclusive of all members of the community.
- Fosters community engagement.
- Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with schools, community groups, and other community partners in order to develop and deliver programs and services that meet local youth needs and interests.
- Conducts outreach at community events and schools.
- Works nights and weekends as needed to support service efforts.
- Provides professional reference and information services to the public, and instructs patrons in using library resources, including the public access computers.
- Provides instruction for patrons and staff on the use of the Internet, Digital Maine Library, Maine InfoNet Download Library, and other online resources.
- Provides patrons with directional, procedural, and reference assistance.
- As needed, provides circulation service to patrons. Including daily circulation of all library materials, new card registration, answering information requests, or advisory services.
- Provides excellent customer service and is committed to equitable public service.
- Is sensitive to patron privacy and intellectual freedom issues.
- Performs related duties as required and/or requested by leadership and coworkers.
Qualifications:
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in child development, education, or library science and prior experience working with youth populations and families preferred. (Any equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.)
- Flexibility in scheduling and availability required.
- Possess a strong interest in children’s literature and for supporting children and families in a library setting.
- Able to give friendly, helpful, inclusive service to all children and families
- Thorough knowledge of the accepted practices and principles of library science, automated circulation services and procedures, and Microsoft Office.
- Working knowledge of automated library systems and personal computers including circulation and catalog software, word processing, and Internet.
- Ability to deal courteously and effectively with others, and to establish and maintain effective relationships with the Director, co-workers, volunteers, advisory board members and the general public.
- Strong communication skills, including public speaking.
- Completes work reliably, accurately, and within allotted time.
- Manages multiple tasks independently, exercising initiative, tact, and independent judgment while fairly enforcing library policies and balancing patron satisfaction.
- Ability to supervise and direct others and to personally perform the work of subordinates if necessary to supplement staff deficiencies.
- Ability to maintain composure in difficult and emotionally challenging situations.
- Mobility: The librarian should be able to move around the library, including walking, standing, and occasionally lifting up to 40 lbs. Reaching for books or materials on shelves, and pushing or pulling objects.
- Vision: Good vision is crucial for reading and reviewing materials, as well as for using computer screens and other digital resources effectively.
- Hearing: Ability to hear and communicate effectively in verbal and written expression, and the ability to hear in close and phone-based interactions.
- Fine Motor Skills: Precise hand-eye coordination for tasks such as shelving books, operating library equipment, and handling delicate materials.
- Sitting for Extended Periods: Many tasks involve sitting at a desk or computer workstation for extended periods of time, engaging in research, writing, and communication activities.
Hours and Compensation:
- 33 hours/week (full time)
- $24.98 per hour
