Job Descripton:
The Arthur and Elizabeth Schlesinger Library on the History of Women in America, located near Harvard Square, is seeking a Processing Assistant. Recognized as one of the world’s leading repositories for documents related to the lives and contributions of American women, the Schlesinger Library provides an exceptional opportunity for a Simmons School of Library and Information Science student to gain immediate, hands-on experience with our extensive manuscript collections. This role is perfect for those
looking to deepen their understanding of archival processes and engage directly with materials that chronicle women’s history.
Position Duties:
Assist with a variety of processing tasks as required to support the department’s objectives. These tasks may include the following:
- Perform preservation photocopying to ensure the longevity of materials.
- Sort and organize documents and folders in chronological or alphabetical order for improved archival management.
- Refolder and physically rehouse collection materials.
- Create folder lists for finding aids in Excel or an XML editor.
- Provide assistance with other aspects of processing as needed.
Work may also include cataloging audiovisual materials and/or processing small collections or parts
of collections.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Currently enrolled students at Simmons School of Library and Information Science (SLIS)
- Completion of Simmons LIS 438 or equivalent graduate-level introductory archives coursework.
Preferred:
- Interest in women’s history and/or women’s studies is preferred.
- Experience with EAD, Excel, and XMetaL or another XML editor is preferred.
Successful candidates will demonstrate:
- Sensitivity to the care and handling of special collections materials.
- Ability to commit to a consistent weekly schedule.
- Attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with a large department team.
- Capacity to work independently and within a team environment.
- Physical ability to lift and move materials weighing up to 40 pounds regularly.
Hours & Compensation:
Hourly Rate: $21
Hours/Week: 14 hours per week.
To be discussed during the interview process. Library Operating Hours: Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM.
