Instruction Librarian, UConn Health Sciences Library, (Farmington, CT)

Job Description:

The UConn Health Sciences Library has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Instruction Librarian to join our team. The Instruction Librarian supports and advances library instructional programs through the application of information literacy standards, instructional design principles, educational technologies, and ongoing assessment efforts. This role provides services to support the educational experience for students, staff, and faculty in various programs, performs routine literature searches and referencing, reached out to the academic community, and offers quality, multidisciplinary reference service to library users.

Position Duties:

  • Performs designated tasks to learn and understand the full range of departmental services and the role expected in the department;
  • Assist with developing and delivering instructional materials and activities that support information literacy and lifelong learning, gaining experience with learning objectives, assessment, and instructional practices;
  • Develops/implements projects;
  • Participates in new instructional initiatives and curriculum-support activities by collaborating with faculty, residents, staff, students, partners, and healthcare professionals;
  • Explains library policies to clients;
  • Delivers course-related and course-integrated library instruction and provides in-person and virtual instructional services using established instructional approaches and materials to support library users;
  • May prepare correspondence and assist with reports;
  • Assists with department long-range planning;
  • Contributes to collection development activities by identifying materials that support academic programs and user needs;
  • Attends professional meetings and participates in professional organizations;
  • Builds knowledge of current and emerging health education trends in medicine, dental medicine, and public health;
  • Utilizes on-line databases and/or bibliographic utilities;
  • Provides routine reference services;
  • Applies established search strategies to conduct routine literature searches in support of research and academic activities;
  • Assigns, supervises and trains staff;
  • Performs related duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • A Master’s Degree in Library Science from a school accredited by the American Library Association. Some familiarity with on-line databases and bibliographic utilities.
  • Knowledge of and understanding of the practice of librarianship in a university, public or academic health sciences library.
  • Knowledge of basic literature searching methods and evidence-based tools and resources.
  • Considerable interpersonal skills.
  • Considerable oral and written communication skills.
  • Some supervisory skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of library resources related to the position.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of health information literacy principles and information literacy instructional and teaching practices related to the position.
  • Demonstrated ability to make a positive contribution to a culture of inclusion and respect in all interactions within the library and across the University.
  • Demonstrated ability to be successful in educational outreach and engagement efforts.
  • Ability to align current library tools, services, and opportunities to support health information literacy learning, research, publications, and scholarship among constituents.
  • Demonstrated public service skills and strong commitment to customer service.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply an open, solutions-oriented approach to problem-solving, including recommending, implementing, and supporting effective solutions.
  • Demonstrated involvement in professional development.
  • Experience with health resources and development of online instructional modules or tutorials.
  • Experience providing advanced reference services in an academic library.
  • Demonstrated experience providing library instruction in health care setting.
  • Experience providing reference services through using specialized databases and reference materials to conduct research for medical information.
  • Conduct literature searching using evidence-based tools and resources.

Hours & Compensation:

This is a full-time position, 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm with a 60-minute unpaid meal break.
