Graduate Student Assistant, Harvard Art Museums Archives/Bush-Reisinger Museum (Cambridge, MA)

Job Description

The Harvard Art Museums Archives seeks a Graduate Student Assistant to survey, arrange, and describe the papers of the German artist Otto Piene (1928-2014). The collection materials are largely in German, and include correspondence, visual materials, personal writings, and publications documenting the life and work of the artist. This position is ideal for candidates with
experience processing personal papers collections and with German language reading knowledge.


This is a less than half time non-benefited position, up to 14 hours per week onsite, approximately September 1, 2026-June 30, 2027.


Position Duties

  • Process the collection using procedures outlined in repository manuals, rehousing materials and assessing preservation needs.
  • Create a DACS-compliant finding aid and MARC record for inclusion in Harvard’s public discovery systems.
  • Catalog cross-references between the collection materials and the Busch-Reisinger Museum’s fine art holdings in the museums’ collection management database.
  • Consult on selection of archival materials for use in outreach programming.


Qualifications


Required

  • Minimum of one year of experience processing and describing archival collections.
  • German language reading knowledge.
  • Ability to lift 40 pounds and climb ladders.


Preferred

  • MLS with an archives concentration or in progress from an ALA-accredited program.
  • Knowledge of DACS and MARC, as well as experience with ArchivesSpace a strong plus.
  • Demonstrated interest in art history and the art of German-speaking countries.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage time and tasks independently and complete projects efficiently.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.


Hours and Compensation

  • Hours must be completed two days per week, Tuesday-Thursday between 9am and 5pm onsite at the museum’s Somerville Research Facility where the museum archives are located.
  • Rate: $22/hour
