Part-Time Children’s Library Assistant, Darien Library, (Darien, CT)

Job Description:

Darien Library seeks a friendly, curious, and energetic candidate to work in the Children’s Library. The successful candidate has experience working with children, families, and caregivers, excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to provide homework help and readers’ advisory. Candidates should also have the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, friendly environment and embrace Darien Library’s “Kindness First” motto in both external and internal service.

Reporting to the Head of Children’s Services, the Children’s Library Assistant may also conduct programming for children, including storytimes and school-age programs.

Position Duties:

  • Staff an active Welcome Desk in the Children’s Library.
  • Provide exemplary hospitality to our library patrons and perform a variety of public-facing circulation duties such as readers’ advisory services for young readers and homework assistance.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of newly published books and confidently share a passion for children’s literature with patrons.
  • Provide support for Children’s Library events and facilitate programs.
  • Other duties as needed.

Qualifications:

  • A college degree with a concentration in education and/or experience working in public libraries or a school setting. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with both children and caregivers. 
  • Willingness to learn, take initiative, and follow through on tasks.
  • Work well both independently and collaboratively as part of the Children’s Services Department.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office computer applications and a working knowledge of information and early literacy principles. 
  • Familiarity with digital technology, mobile devices, and social media. 
  • Enrollment in or completion of an MLS program at an ALA-accredited library sciences or information sciences graduate program is preferred. 
  • Fluency in a language other than English is desirable; additional consideration will be given to candidates fluent in Spanish.

Hours & Compensation:

$22-$29.50 an hour, commensurate with experience and CLA minimum requirements. This is a part-time position with no benefits.

The candidate will work an average of 3 to 6 hours per week, including one weekday, plus two weekends per month. This position also includes holiday coverage on a rotating basis, plus additional shifts as needed, not to exceed 29 hours per week. This schedule is for planning purposes only. Actual hours may vary and are subject to modification due to staffing needs, programming, or other operational demands of the Library.
