Darien Library seeks an enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and community-minded Part-Time Film Programmer to oversee the Library’s film collection while providing meaningful cinematic programming for adult patrons. The successful candidate possesses a passion for film history and world cinema, embraces Darien Library’s “Kindness First” motto in both internal and external service, and is excited to connect patrons with films that educate, entertain, and inspire.

Reporting to the Head of Adult Programming, the Film Programmer is responsible for the development, cataloging, preservation, and promotion of the Library’s DVD and digital film collections. Working collaboratively, they will curate engaging collections, provide readers’-advisory-style film recommendations, and develop film-related programming that reflects the Library’s commitment to lifelong learning and cultural enrichment.

Responsibilities

Plan and facilitate film screenings, discussion groups, and educational programming, ensuring compliance with copyright and licensing requirements for public screenings; coordinate the acquisition and processing of new materials with Materials Management staff.
Select, evaluate, and maintain the Library’s circulating film collection in a variety of formats, and responsibly manage the Library’s film budget.
Weed, replace, and preserve materials to maintain a relevant and attractive collection.
Monitor collection performance using circulation data, community interests, and emerging trends.
Participate in regular Film Committee meetings to assist with the selection of materials for public programs.
Provide exemplary customer service to patrons a minimum of four (4) hours per week staffing an active public service desk.
Collaborate with Library staff on interdisciplinary programming that incorporates film into broader Library initiatives.
Participate and support a wide range of Library programs offered by the Adult Programming department.
Other duties and special projects as assigned.

Physical Requirements

The essential job duties and responsibilities include the ability to perform tasks that may require maintaining a stationary position for extended periods; moving, lifting, and transporting materials weighing up to 50 lbs.; and positioning items through bending, stooping, reaching, or similar movements. Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree required.
Experience coordinating and developing programs for adults in libraries, museums, or art institutions preferred.
Demonstrated knowledge of film history, genres, and world cinema.
Demonstrated commitment to providing exceptional customer service.
Collaborative mindset with the ability to work harmoniously with staff, vendors, and external organizations.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills; the successful candidate will have excellent public speaking abilities.
Exceptional organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Skilled at working with diverse audiences.
Proficient in using technology including Outlook and Microsoft Office Suite.
Bilingual candidates, or those with a functional knowledge of another language, are desirable.

Hours and Compensation

Hours: The candidate will work an average of 15 to 20 hours per week, including evenings and weekends, plus additional shifts as needed, not to exceed 29 hours per week.

Salary: $22-$25 per hour, commensurate with experience. This is a part-time position with no benefits.
