Position Summary
The Wood Memorial Library & Museum (WMLM) seeks a dynamic, organized Archivist and Research Librarian to manage, preserve, and provide access to historical documents, special collections, books and research materials while aiding patrons in
utilizing these resources. This is a part-time position that requires excellent organization and communication skills, deep knowledge of content management systems, historical research methods and archival databases as well as an ability to develop and conduct live and on-line educational programs to promote use and knowledge about the
collections.
The Wood holds an extensive archival collection of personal papers, photographs and ephemera donated by local residents. An impressive oral history project has been recorded and much of this material has been catalogued and digitized and is available
online. In addition, there is a children’s book collection as well as a research collection of books focusing on the history of local Native American tribes, Connecticut, colonial New England. The Wood also holds Native American artifact collections, ornithological collections of local birds, as well as artwork and early American furniture. Knowledge and interest in
curatorial duties is a plus. The Wood’s research book collection is listed in TinyCat and information about the museum collections and archives is available through PastPerfect.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide in-depth research support, conduct reference interviews to assist users in accessing, and locating specific information within specialized, non-circulating collections.
- Create and update finding aids, indexes, and metadata for archival collections.
- Manage and preserve physical and digital repositories, curate online databases, and digitize archival materials for improved accessibility.
- Evaluate, authenticate, acquire, and catalog new materials for the collection, coordinating with donors and managing budgets.
- Centennial & 250th Anniversary Alignment: Integrate educational programs with key 2026–2027 celebrations.
- Use the collections and archives to create presentations/programs, newsletter, and/or social media posts to generate interest in the Wood and its collection.
- Administration: Maintain records and assist with grant writing and reporting.
Essential Skills and Qualifications
- Education: Bachelors in Library and Information Science or related field with archival experience. Masters a plus (MLS/MLIS). Certificate programs will also be considered.
- Skills: Excellent communication, organization, research, problem-solving, customer service, and digital and social media proficiency.
- Traits: Patience, detail-oriented, passion for research, and adaptability to new trends.
Compensation
Part-time, approx. 10-20 hours/week; pay based on experience.
