Youth Services Librarian- Head of Youth, Pembroke Public Library (Pembroke, MA)

The Pembroke Public Library is seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Youth Services Librarian, Head of Youth for our busy library and vibrant community. This position serves children from 0-18 and their caregivers, and is responsible for developing, planning, organizing, directing, and evaluating programs, collections, and operations within the Youth Services Department. 

Responsibilities

  • Selects materials for youth collections, including children’s, young adult and caregiver resources
  • Plans displays and resource recommendation lists for the children’s and young adult areas
  • Supervises staff assigned to the youth services area
  • Trains staff regarding updates in youth services procedures
  • Plans, implements, and evaluates library programs for youth and families
  • Provides prompt, courteous, and direct assistance to patrons regarding use of library materials and services
  • Represents the library at external programming and outreach events
  • Performs reader’s advisory and reference services to children, young adults and caregivers
  • Writes monthly reports that evaluate services and makes recommendations for improvements or additional services
  • Acts as Supervisor in charge in absence of the Director and Assistant Director
  • Curates and creates website and social media content for youth and families
  • Performs other duties as required

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must have MLS from an ALA-accredited program
  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience working with children and young adults
  • The ability to work with the schools and daycare facilities
  • Excellent knowledge of children’s and young adult literature
  • Knowledge of an integrated library computer system as well as personal computers
  • Experience with creative programming
  • Administrative experience in a library setting


Additional Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience working in a school library
  • Experience working as a teacher


Special Requirements

  • Possess telephone courtesy and customer service skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated customer service ability to deal with a full spectrum of staff and public contacts
  • Present a clean, neat and professional appearance


Physical Requirements

  • May spend extended periods of time at computer terminal, on the telephone, or operating other office machines, requiring eye-hand coordination and finger dexterity.
  • Normal vision is required for this position.
  • Regular lifting and carrying of files, documents, records, etc. is routine.
  • Employee will be required to talk, listen, sit for long periods, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and reach.

Hours and Compensation

Regular shifts will include one evening a week and one Saturday every four weeks. This is a full-time position, scheduled for 37.5 hours per week, with a salary range of $56,025-$68,277.
