Since 1873 the Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston (CSJ) have been of service to the Greater Boston area. Originally a teaching community, today many sisters, in coordination with associates and agrégées, share a united mission of loving the dear neighbor without distinction and contribute to a world desperately in need of unity. CSJ’s and other Sister of St. Joseph communities are united in this mission alongside lay partners all over the world. The Archives of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston (Boston CSJ Archives) centralize, organize, preserve, protect and make available records and materials which pertain to the origin, history, spirit, growth and life of the Congregation. The Archives also reflect the various apostolates and ministries of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston. Archive materials provide knowledge of the Congregation’s heritage, appreciation for the dedication and sacrifice of those women who gave witness to the unique charism of the Boston CSJs and motivates the present membership to keep alive and viable the spirit which marks one as a Sister of St. Joseph. The Archivist serves in a staff position and is appointed by the President after consultations with the Council. The Archivist’s chief functions is to manage and direct the various activities related to the Boston CSJ Archives. The Archivist shall: Publish inventories of materials periodically; Submit articles related to the archives to the Congregation’s newsletter/magazine; Assist researchers and other users (both internal and external) in their use of archival materials; Increase archival holdings by raising awareness within the Congregation of the
values of Archives; Assist sisters in their efforts to record for posterity their living and preaching of the Good News; Maintain a Records Retention Service, keeping easily available the records of house and departments; Join and participate in meetings of archival organizations.
Qualifications:
- Interest in Catholic Religious Archives/Women Religious Archives/Special Collections Motivated/takes initiative Organized and detail-orientated
- Familiar with arrangement and description guidelines, theory and principals:importance of maintaining original order, MPLP, etc
- Familiar and comfortable writing Finding Aids, container lists, etc
- Familiarity with archival management systems software and computer proficiency: including databases, Microsoft Office software and the use of scanners.
- Enrolled or graduate of MLIS program
- On-Site
- The ability to engage with a range of audiences
- Be able to lift 40 lbs.
