Job Description:
Responsible for overseeing the Technical Services Department. Work is performed under the supervision of the Assistant Director and requires exercising independent judgment in planning and carrying out tasks. The position requires the supervision of volunteers.
The Patten Free Library, located in Bath, Maine, is a non-profit library that serves the City of Bath and the Towns of Arrowsic, Georgetown, West Bath, and Woolwich. (Total population served is app. 15,279.)
Position Duties:
- Oversees all activities related to technical services including acquisitions, classification and cataloging, materials processing, serials management, and statistical reports.
- Performs original and copy cataloging of library materials in a consortial setting.
- Supervises, trains, and schedules volunteers.
- Develops, implements, and evaluates policies and procedures for the Department.
- Attends required professional meetings, workshops, and conferences.
- Orders processing supplies.
- Assists and advises Library Administration with the composition and implementation of library policies. May serve on library and/or Board committees.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education/Experience:
- A bachelor’s degree.
- A Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited library school.
- At least three years’ experience working in a technical services department.
Performance Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics:
- Cataloging experience, ranging from copy to original cataloging for all items including archival materials.
- Thorough knowledge of library principles, policies, and procedures, especially related to technical services.
- Good knowledge of automated library systems and office applications.
- Working knowledge of library acquisitions procedures.
- Ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions.
- Ability to assign, supervise, and review the work of volunteers.
- Ability to perform close, detailed work involving considerable visual concentration.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills for working effectively with staff, volunteers, and patrons.
- Strong time management and organizational skills.
- Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position: standing, bending, lifting up to 50lbs., and pushing and pulling book carts.
Hours & Compensation:
Hours of work: 20 hours per week.
Hourly Rate: $23.85-$25.39 based on experience.
