Senior Library Assistant (Part-Time) – Circulation & Young Adult Services, Hopkinton Public Library, (Hopkinton, MA)

The Town of Hopkinton is seeking a friendly, energetic, and service-minded Senior Library Assistant to join our team. This unique part-time position combines traditional circulation responsibilities with dedicated time supporting our Young Adult (YA) area, serving tweens and teens in our community.

We’re looking for someone who not only enjoys excellent customer service, but who genuinely likes working with young people and helping create a welcoming, engaging library experience for middle school and high school students. Our ideal candidate understands that libraries can be an important space for young people to learn, connect, and explore their interests.

Responsibilities

The Senior Library Assistant performs advanced administrative and clerical work in support of daily library operations while delivering excellent customer service to patrons. This role requires tact, discretion, attention to detail, and the ability to thrive in a flexible, team-oriented environment.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent required. An Associate’s Degree, library coursework, and three (3) or more years of customer service experience within a public library are preferred, although an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered. The successful candidate will possess strong communication, organizational, and computer skills; the ability to work both independently and collaboratively; and a genuine interest in serving young adult library patrons. Experience working with tweens and teens is strongly preferred.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills: 

  • Knowledge of customer service best practices.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with various audiences including public officials and the general public.
  • Ability to learn computer operations and related library databases; ability to troubleshoot computers and other library equipment.
  • Knowledge of public library policies and procedures, including automated circulation systems and other library-related software preferred.
  • Knowledge of reference sources, principles of circulation, research, automated library systems, and other library-related software preferred.

Hours and Compensation

Anticipated Hourly rate: $22.26  (Dependent Upon Qualifications)

Hours: 19 hours per week

Scheduled Hours:

Sunday: 11:30 AM – 4:00 PM

Monday: 8:30 AM – 1:00 PM

Tuesday: 4:30 PM – 8:00 PM (Young Adult Services)

Thursday: 1:00 PM – 8:00 PM, Circulation & Young Adult Services 

Additional hours may be available to cover open shifts when substitutes are unavailable
