Job Description:
We are seeking an experienced, efficient archivist for a short-term project (approximately two months) based on-site in Boston. The project involves processing the personal files of five individuals—four deceased and one living, several of whom are publicly known figures.
Position Duties:
The archivist will sort and appraise the collection and make processing recommendations, specifically determining which materials should be:
- digitized for preservation and access;
- prepared for potential donation to the Library of Congress (or a comparable repository); and
- deaccessioned or discarded.
Qualifications:
- Graduate degree in archival studies, library/information science, or equivalent professional experience;
- Demonstrated experience processing personal papers and manuscript collections, including appraisal and arrangement;
- Familiarity with the donation and acquisition processes of major repositories (Library of Congress experience a plus);
- Discretion and sound judgment in handling sensitive and confidential materials;
- Ability to work efficiently on-site and complete the project within the engagement window.
Hours & Compensation:
- On-site in Boston, MA; approximately two months
- Independent contractor; competitive hourly rate commensurate with experience
- Confidentiality agreement required
