Darien Library (CT) seeks a creative, energetic, and enthusiastic candidate to join a dedicated Tween & Teen Services Department as the full-time Tween & Teen Innovation Lab Coordinator.
This position will serve primarily as a library assistant, collaborating with the Head of Tween & Teen services on programming, collection, and outreach, and coordinating and providing all Innovation Lab services for tweens and teens.
The highly-motivated candidate will have a passion for public service, knowledge of digital fabrication machines and other makerspace technology, experience working with youth (specifically ages 10 and up), and a desire to thrive in a fast-paced environment. The candidate will join a tight-knit and very collaborative team in providing extraordinary services to the Community.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
- Serves as an ambassador of the Teen Center and the Innovation Lab, both within the Library and outside in the community.
- Provides exemplary customer services to patrons on public desk in Tween & Teen Library and Innovation Lab Makerspace.
- Plans, promotes, and hosts new programs, activities, and learning opportunities for tween and teen patrons, coordinating programming for ages 10 and up with peers in the Library and outside presenters.
- Collaborates with the Head of Tween & Teen Services on outreach to tweens and teens.
- Collaborates with the Children’s Library on Innovation Lab programming.
- Provides exemplary reference and readers’ advisory services to tweens, teens, parents, caregivers, and educators in the community.
- Assists on an as-needed basis with adult use of the Innovation Lab.
- Actively participates in relevant professional organizations.
- Available to work one evening per week and one weekend a month, in addition to special events.
Qualifications & Skills
- Bachelor’s degree required. 1-3 years’ experience in a tween or teen library setting preferred.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and commitment to hospitality in public service.
- Professional experience working with youth, especially tweens ages 10 and up.
- Highly collaborative, organized, and able to prioritize tasks and responsibilities.
- Knowledge of current library trends and their ever-evolving role in public libraries.
- Demonstrable facility using makerspace tools and technology.
- Attention to detail and strong aptitude in written and oral communication.
- Knowledge of current publishing trends and popular authors, specifically for ages 10 and up.
- Proficiency with both Mac and PC software and applications.
- Knowledge of design software and coding highly desirable.
- Bilingual candidates, or those with functional knowledge of another language, are highly desirable.
- Other duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements
The essential job duties and responsibilities include the ability to perform tasks that may require maintaining a stationary position for extended periods; moving, lifting, and transporting materials such as books weighing up to 50 lbs.; and positioning items through bending, stooping, reaching, or similar movements. Salary
$65,000 annually for a 37.5 hour, five-day week. Compensation package includes health, pension, and generous vacation, sick, and personal leave. Significant opportunities for professional development available.
