Term: Fall 2026
Hours: Flexible; project may continue into future semesters
About the Organization
The Dimock Center, formerly the New England Hospital for Women and Children, was founded in 1862 as one of the first hospitals in the country staffed entirely by women physicians. Today, Dimock continues to provide Boston’s most underserved communities comprehensive health and human services.
About the Internship
The Dimock Center is seeking a graduate student intern to support a multi-phase archival digitization project aimed at preserving and reuniting a significant collection of historical institutional records from the New England Hospital for Women and Children. Materials span the 1880s through the 1920s and include correspondence, committee reports, hospital summaries, photographs, and press materials. The collection is slated for permanent donation to the Sophia Smith Collection of Women’s History at Smith College, where a portion of the collection already resides. The intern will work closely with project collaborators, including historian Susan Wilson, author of Women and Children First: The Trailblazing Life of Susan Dimock, M.D. (McFarland & Co., 2023), and will have access to guidance from archivists at Smith College’s Special Collections.
This is a meaningful opportunity to contribute to the preservation of a primary source collection documenting women’s leadership in medicine and public health in Boston.

- Professionalism and discretion in interacting with a range of stakeholders
- Interest in women’s history, the history of medicine, or Boston history is a plus
