For Summer 2026:

At least 8 hours/week with the opportunity to pick up additional shifts as needed

***Must have availability Mondays and Wednesdays from 10am-2pm***

Working under the direction of the Library Deputy Director and the User Services Library Fellow, the Student Worker II supports the daily operations of User Services, including the provision of reference and circulation services to members of the Simmons community and the general public. This is a fast paced, public facing position that requires the ability to multitask. Ability to work on-campus for face-to-face service required. Student Worker IIs are generally assigned 2 to 4 hour shifts, not to exceed more than 20 hours in one week. Shift assignments can occur anytime during open library hours, including shifts which open or close the library, as well as weekend hours. Exact shift schedule will be determined based on the candidate’s availability and the Library’s needs.

Responsibilities

Circulation and Reference

  • The Student Worker II staffs a public facing Service Desk in the provision of circulation and reference services.
  • Assists patrons in person, via phone, email and online chat, to answer reference questions, circulate library material, maintain user accounts, and provide general customer service.
  • Troubleshoots library technology such as computers, printers (multi-function devices), and closed-circuit television.
  • Maintains users’ privacy.

Interlibrary Loan

  • Assists with all aspects of Interlibrary Loan service, including processing mail, filling requests for Simmons patrons (borrowing), and filling requests from other libraries (lending).

Other Duties

  • Performs Library opening and closing duties as scheduled.
  • Monitors the physical library space to ensure a safe, inclusive environment for all users.
  • Participates in departmental projects as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Current enrollment in the Simmons SLIS program.
  • Completion of or enrollment in LIS 407.
  • Commitment to providing excellent customer service.
  • Capable of working with technology and online systems.
  • High level of attention to detail.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain a consistent work schedule.
  • NO PRIOR LIBRARY EXPERIENCE NECESSARY.

Hours and Compensation

Pay Rate: $17/hour
