Tufts Archival Research Center (TARC) is the archives and manuscript repository of Tufts University. TARC’s team of professional archivists provides stewardship for the Tufts University Archives, hundreds of manuscript collections, and other permanently valuable physical and digital archival materials, with strong collecting areas in the fields of environmental justice, social justice, and media and broadcast history. TARC staff also assist Tufts students, faculty, and staff with recordkeeping activities, through records management and digital library services.
TARC has an opening for a part-time Digital Processing Assistant available ASAP. Applicants must be graduate students currently enrolled in an Archives Management program and have some knowledge of, or exposure to, digital preservation and archives or special collections operations (through coursework or comparable experience). Familiarity with the command line or programming languages is a plus.
Responsibilities
The Digital Processing Assistant will work under the guidance the Head of Technical Services. They will gain experience in digital preservation and processing, including participation in TARC’s modern strategies for managing, describing, and providing access to born-digital archives. They will also receive training on the use of tools such as ArchivesSpace, Preservica, Archive-It, and other digital preservation tools and systems.
Responsibilities include:
- inventorying and stabilizing obsolete digital media
- enhancing existing collection description
- describing born-digital material
- preparing collections for ingest
- social media web archiving
Qualifications
Applicants must be graduate students currently enrolled in an Archives Management program and have some knowledge of, or exposure to, digital preservation and archives or special collections operations (through coursework or comparable experience). Familiarity with the command line or programming languages is a plus.
Applicants must be available to work 20 hours a week Monday-Friday, 9-4:30. This is a temporary position through the end of August 2026.
Candidates should be capable of working fairly independently and feel comfortable juggling multiple tasks. Excellent written and oral communication skills required. Compensation is $20 per hour.
