Makerspace Facilitator, Simmons University, (Boston, MA)

Job Description:

The SLIS Makerspace is a student-led innovation hub where creativity, technology, and entrepreneurship intersect. It’s a collaborative environment where students explore new tools, design projects, and bring ideas to life.

The Makerspace Facilitator is a key student leadership role responsible for daily operations, user support, and team supervision. This position offers hands-on experience in leadership, program coordination, and emerging technologies—ideal for students interested in innovation, education, and creative problem-solving.

Key Responsibilities:

Operations & Space Management

  • Oversee daily Makerspace operations and maintain a welcoming, inclusive environment
  • Monitor space usage, enforce policies, and ensure safe equipment practices
  • Manage inventory, organization, and purchasing of supplies and equipment

Leadership & Team Support

  • Supervise, schedule, and train a team of student workers
  • Provide guidance and support to staff during shifts
  • Foster a collaborative and positive team culture

Programming & User Engagement

  • Support and facilitate workshops, classes, and special events
  • Assist users with tools, equipment, and project development
  • Collaborate on curricular, co-curricular, and outreach initiatives

Documentation & Technology

  • Develop and maintain clear documentation for equipment and training
  • Track participation data and support assessment efforts
  • Explore and support emerging technologies (e.g., VR/AR, digital fabrication tools)

Position Details:

  • Must be a SLIS student graduating no earlier than May 2027
  • Hours: ~15 hours per week
  • Schedule: Primarily in-person (Monday–Friday), with occasional remote work
  • Pay: $17/hour
  • Reports to: SLIS Technology Manager

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous leadership or supervisory experience
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative
  • Experience teaching, mentoring, or guiding others (1:1 or group settings)
  • Interest in creative technologies, design, or entrepreneurship
  • Familiarity with Google Workspace tools
  • Commitment to equity and inclusion

Highly encouraged: Experience or interest in:

  • 3D printing
  • Cricut or digital cutting tools
  • Sewing/embroidery
  • Paper crafts
