Philip Benevento History Internship, Mattatuck Museum, (Waterbury, CT)
Posted April 9, 2026
Description:
The Mattatuck Museum in Waterbury, Connecticut is seeking a summer intern to work in the museum
archives. The Mattatuck Museum is both an art and a local history museum with manuscript, printed,
and photographic archives dating from the late 17th century to the present.
The selected intern will work two days per week for six weeks during the summer, alongside the museum archivist/librarian. The goal is for the intern to produce a work of scholarship (either oral or written) drawing on the resources in the museum archives. This year’s focus will be on processing and organizing the photo archive of the Republican-American.
The Republican-American is a newspaper that serves the greater Waterbury area. Formed from the merger of the Waterbury American and the Waterbury Republican, the paper’s archive represents nearly two hundred years of local and national history.
At the conclusion of the internship, the intern will create a finding aid to make the collection publicly available.

Applicants should have a major field related to history, urban studies, American studies, or library science.
- Applicants must submit a resume and a cover letter stating areas of research/study interest and career goals.
- A curious mind and strong written communication are especially desirable. Preference will be given to applicants who live in Waterbury or are current college students in Waterbury.
Hours and Compensation:
