Scholarly Communication Librarian, Rowan University Libraries, (Rowan, NJ)

Rowan University Libraries supports several scholarly communication initiatives, including Read & Publish Agreements, an Open Access Publishing Fund, an institutional repository, and a journal hosting platform. This role manages several key tools and services that support faculty and student researchers across Rowan University, focusing on open access publishing and institutional repositories, and research data management. Reporting directly to the Associate Director of Collection Services, the position supports these services for all campuses and members of the Rowan community. The person in this role conducts workshops, individual consultations, and outreach to the Rowan community in each of the areas below. In addition to the responsibilities below, the position completes other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

Non-tenure-track AFT librarians are expected to remain current in their fields of expertise by engaging in activities that support their professional development and to provide service to the wider Rowan community, including Rowan University Libraries and University-wide committees; their responsibilities do not require scholarship, research, creative activity, or service to the wider community and profession.

Open Access Publishing

  • Document open access publishing funding options for faculty/researchers/students, including the University Libraries evolving Read & Publish Agreements and the University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund.
  • Advocate on behalf of the Rowan community to address any unmet needs for open access funding, including potential updates to Read & Publish Agreements, desired new agreements with additional publishers/vendors, alterations to Article Processing Charge funding policies, and alterations to open access publishing funding systems and workflows
  • Conduct outreach, teaching, and support for the Rowan community in using these Rowan-supported funding models for open access publishing
  • Maintain the system for faculty/researchers/students to discover and request funding (currently ChronosHub)
    Institutional Repository
  • Manage Rowan’s institutional repository, Rowan Digital Works.(currently Elsevier Digital Commons)
  • Make recommendations about local implementations of upgrades and integrations for the Institutional Repository.
  • Manage effective workflows for deposit or automated ingest, ensuring accurate and complete metadata, rights compliance, and structural organization (i.e. deposit rules)
  • Consult with faculty, graduate students, and university staff on best practices or strategies to better manage, describe, preserve, and make available their scholarly work, manage their copyrights and researcher identifiers; and fulfill federal and international mandates for sharing/disseminating research outputs

Research Data Management

  • Manage DMP Tool, and any successor systems, in support of faculty/researchers in creating Data Management Plans
  • Document and recommend options for data storage and deposit for faculty/researchers
  • Conduct sustainable outreach, training, and support for faculty/researchers regarding funder data access policies
  • Monitor open access mandates from key funders and researcher compliance at Rowan, addressing through updated documentation and expanded outreach
  • Assess the eNectiveness of research data management support services and develop plans to improve impact and processes, advocating on behalf of researchers to address any unmet needs for data storage and sharing

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Library Science (MLS/MLIS) from a library school accredited by the American Library Association (or ALA-recognized foreign equivalent)
  • At least 3 years of experience as an institutional repository, data management, open access, scholarly communication, or similar librarian
  • Ability to effectively articulate complex concepts such as authors’ rights, copyright, and Creative Commons open licensing.
  • Knowledge of and interest in issues, trends and technologies related to academic research and scholarly communication practice.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including a collaborative approach to problem-solving.
  • Independence and initiative, including the ability to be flexible and manage competing priorities.
  • Experience advising faculty, students, or staff on research dissemination strategies, including open access publishing and institutional repository deposit
  • Knowledge of journal selection considerations, including scope and audience fit, impact metrics, publisher policies, and open access models

Preferred Qualifications

  • Second advanced degree in a related discipline
  • Experience supporting data management planning
  • Demonstrated experience assisting researchers with ORCID IDs and other researcher identifiers to support attribution, discoverability, and compliance
  • Ability to guide researchers in evaluating journals and identifying reputable publishing venues, including awareness of predatory publishing practices

Hours and Compensation

  • In compliance with The State of New Jersey’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is:
    • Non-Tenure Track Librarian II: AFT: Range 24-26
