Description
The internship will provide assistance to the Librarian/Archivist with researcher inquiries, data entry, checking in and shelving of books, scanning and photocopying of materials, and various tasks as needed to learn about and support the daily running of the Library and Archives.
In addition, each intern will work on a long-term project that is educational in nature. The project can be determined based on the intern’s interests and career goals but must be pre-approved by the Primary Supervisor. Examples of possible projects include: audio/visual materials inventory, collection(s) care recommendations, and digitization proposal; processing of archival materials and creation of an EAD compliant finding aid, MARC record, and Wikipedia entry; library cataloging and collection management project; preservation work and inventory; assist with creation of a records management manual draft.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Complete a long-term project directed by the Librarian/Archivist which may include materials inventory, collection(s) care; archival processing, records management, or other tasks with prior approval by Librarian/Archivist.
- Create a scope of work proposal for long-term projects.
- Respond to researcher inquiries.
- Complete data entry to support the running of the library.
- Check in and shelve books according to Walters’ cataloging system.
- Scan and photocopy materials.
- Attend Curatorial Department and other staff meetings as directed.
- Participate in an orientation to the museum and collaborate on and participate in continuing professional development designed with emerging professionals in mind.
- All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Candidates must be 18 years or older and preferably actively registered at either a community college, university, or trade school or, may have recently graduated from a community college or university.
- Priority given to students who are residents of Baltimore City or County or whose colleges or universities are in Baltimore City or County.
- Preference given to a current student of a program in library and information sciences, public history with coursework in archives, or art history.
- Relevant work experience in a library or archives setting may be substituted for educational experience.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work accurately with attention to detail.
- Passion for customer service.
- Commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion through library and archival practice.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
- Able to lift 30 pounds and stand on ladders.
Hours and Compensation
- Ability to work 40 hours per week.
- Must be able to work on-site at the museum 5 days per week.
- The regular work week is Monday through Friday.
- hourly rate is $17.00
