Job Description:
The Acushnet Public Library is seeking a friendly, detail-oriented, public service-minded
individual to join our team. This position will support programming, collection development, and
the daily operation of a busy Children’s Room. The ideal candidate will have experience working
with youth of all ages and have strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
Position Duties:
Under the supervision of the Library Director, the Children’s Room Assistant will be responsible for the following:
- Provide reference and reader’s advisory to patrons of all ages, with a primary focus on youth from birth through the 6th grade.
- Present story times, craft programs, and other youth services.
- Assist with collection development and cataloging/processing.
- Assist patrons in the use of databases, as well as other online resources, and in locating materials for school projects.
- Conduct library tours and class visits & represent the library in the community outreach Efforts.
- Locate and shelve Children’s Room materials.
- Create vibrant displays throughout the Children’s Room.
- Assist with circulation duties/general library services at the Information Desk and other duties as assigned.
- Some supervision in the absence of the Library Director or Patron Services Supervisor.
Qualifications:
- Must have proficient computer and technology skills.
- Must be able to work well with children.
- Must have knowledge of and an interest in juvenile literature.
- Must have strong organizational skills and the ability to multitask.
- Must have strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule, which will include every other Saturday and some evening hours.
- Public library experience, preferably in a Children’s Room.
- At least a two-year college degree; BA/BS preferred.
- Ideal candidate will be creative, artistic, and able to design/implement imaginative programming.
- The right candidate will be outgoing, customer service-oriented, and willing to quickly adapt to a fast-paced library environment.
Physical Demands:
- Standing, walking, and stooping for extended periods of time.
- Lifting books continually for extended periods of time.
- Pushing wheeled book carts weighing up to 200 pounds.
- Bending and kneeling to reach books on bottom floor-level shelf.
- Reaching overhead to shelve/retrieve books.
- Performing repetitive hand, arm and body movements.
- Occasionally lifting 25-40 pounds.
Hours and Compensation:
35 hours / week @ $20.12/ hour with step increases per union contract.
This position is in the AFSCME union and is benefited.
