Summer Internships, Historic New England, (Various locations, Remote)

Historic New England offers internships all three semesters each year: fall, spring, and summer. The number and type of internships will vary depending on the projects available.

Internship Positions Available:

  • Collections Management- (Haverhill, MA) The Collections Management Intern will acquire the necessary skills related to collections management and registration within the museum field. The intern will assist the team with researching, cataloguing, inventorying, and rehousing collections at the Haverhill Collections Storage Facility and our historic properties. Additionally, the intern will participate and acquire the skills in hands-on preventive collections care tasks at the historic properties with the collections team. 
  • Exhibitions- (Haverhill, MA) The Exhibitions Intern will contribute to Historic New England’s current and upcoming exhibitions, including developing and editing web exhibition content, assisting with the initial stages of future exhibition design, and troubleshooting physical and digital interactives for the Shoe Stories exhibition. For the Summer 2026 internship, a working knowledge of Spanish would be a plus. 
  • Historic Preservation: Accessibility- (Remote) The Accessibility Intern will test accessibility of historic doors, and research potential solutions. This internship would include researching historic materials, environmental issues, and accessibility code. A love of history and numbers is ideal.  
  • Historic Preservation: Climate Action- (Remote) The Climate Action Intern will assist with supporting our organizational climate action goals in the areas of mitigation, resilience, and climate justice. This work may include projects focused on emissions tracking, researching decarbonization options, climate risk assessments, and resilience planning. 
  • Museum Operations: Lyman Estate- (Waltham, MA) The Museum Operations Intern will develop interpretive materials based on new and existing research related to the Lyman Estate in Waltham, MA to help us share more detailed personal histories. This may include developing guide training materials, interpretive signs, social media posts, and online content. They may also help plan and implement museum programing related to the historic mansion and greenhouses. 
  • Museum Operations: Rocky Hill Meeting House- (Amesbury, MA) The Museum Operations Intern will conduct research projects at Rocky Hill Meeting House and Spencer-Peirce-Little Farm with the goal of enhancing the tours and programs. Projects may include, but are not limited to researching Meeting House pews and the families who worshipped there and documenting and researching historical graffiti.
  • Research- (Remote) The Research Intern will conduct primary and secondary historical and archival research to support the research agenda of the Study Center and Recovering New England’s Voices. They will learn how to transition their research into a product for museum visitors such as an in person or digital tour, public program, web content, etc.   
  • Stopping Stones- (Remote) The Stopping Stones Intern will conduct research on national projects related to the history of enslavement in support of the Stopping Stones, a national program that works with local partner organizations to honor the memories of enslaved individuals in the locations where they were held. The intern will also organize genealogical data, transcribe historical records, and contribute to public-facing research.
  • Visitor Engagement- (Haverhill, MA) The Visitor Engagement Intern will assist with visitor experience operations at the new Haverhill Welcome and Exhibition Center. They will help staff facilitate family activity programming with a focus on designing, preparing and working with children on arts and culture activities. 
  • Witness Stones- (Remote) The Witness Stones intern will work on projects that support the mission and growth of Witness Stones, the youth and education branch of Stopping Stones. The will work on projects including, but not limited to, conducting research to help restore the history and honor the humanity of enslaved persons; finding, cataloging, and transcribing primary documents for use in the classroom; and adding to our outward-facing website database so key primary documents are available to the public.  

Qualifications

Below are the requirements to be eligible for an internship at Historic New England. If you do not meet all of the listed criteria, we, unfortunately, are unable to accept your application.

  • Residency in a New England state (ME, NH, MA, RI, CT, or VT) during the internship tenure
    • This is a requirement for all internship positions including remote internships.
  • Ability to attend the in-person internship orientation at our collections facility in Haverhill, MA from 12:00-3:30pm
    • The date for summer 2026 will post on or before the application window opens on 2/23
  • Enrollment in a college/university program or have graduated within 24-months of the start of the internship

Hours and Compensation

Schedule:

Internships run thirteen weeks and follow this general schedule:

  • Fall Semester: the second week of September to the first week of December
  • Spring Semester: the first week of February to the last week of April
  • Summer Semester: the first week of June to the last week of August

Compensation:

  • Interns work a total of 130 hours over the semester averaging 10 per week at $16 per hour
  • Extensive professional development training including (but not limited to): resume and cover letter writing, interviewing, navigating the job market, etc.
  • A cross-disciplinary, cohort experience
  • Travel expenses covered for work and activities related to the internship
  • 1-year Historic New England Membership, student Level
  • Historic New England Summit registration
  • On-site field trip experiences

The application window for summer 2026 will open at 10am on Monday, February 23rd and will close at 11:59pm on Sunday, March 1st. A link to the application form will be posted on this page and we will only accept applications for the summer 2026 semester during that window.
