Summary Description:
Buckingham Browne & Nichols School (BB&N) seeks a full-time, dynamic, student-centered Middle School Library Director. This role offers the opportunity to work at the intersection of advising, research, teaching, and program development in a vibrant middle school community. The Middle School Library Director oversees all operations and programming in the Middle School (Grades 7 and 8) Library Learning Commons and is a key community team member who works collaboratively on curriculum and programming with MS faculty and students. Through collaborative and engaged leadership, the Middle School Library Director ensures that the middle school library program is aligned with the school’s mission, values, and goals.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities:
Key functions for this position include, but are not limited to:
- Leading and managing all daily library operations, including circulation, research support, library programming, and organization of library resources.
- Overseeing library budget and strategic purchasing decisions.
- Providing one-on-one and group instruction in research methods, citation practices, and effective use of databases and other resources.
- Actively participating in curriculum development and cross-disciplinary collaboration.
- Developing and curating library collections of digital and print resources that reflect the community and supporting and enhancing curriculum goals and learning objectives, in addition to weeding and maintaining a diverse and current collection.
- Engaging students through creative displays, programming, and events that promote reading and discovery.
- Coordinating and managing relationships with library vendors.
- Managing the library website, creating web-based user-friendly resource guides and research pathways, and designing and implementing information literacy curricula aligned with classroom curriculum.
- With other Middle School professionals, collaboratively developing student-centered developmentally appropriate policies addressing academic honesty, responsible technology use and integration, generative AI guidelines, library services, collection challenges, material selection, copyright understanding, privacy protection, and digital citizenship.
- Encouraging the use of instructional technology to engage students and to improve learning, and providing 24/7 access to digital information resources for the entire learning community.
- Participating in faculty meetings, educational conferences, professional days, workshops, and other training seminars
- Designing and developing programs that foster a school-wide culture of reading through author collaborations, student book discussions, literary celebrations, and interactive events that connect readers with books and each other, celebrating diverse voices and stories.
- Maintaining knowledge of research, developments, and best practices in secondary education and the library profession
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements, Skills, and Competencies:
The ideal candidate will have a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science or Library Science from a program accredited by the American Library Association (or from a master’s-level program in library and information studies accredited or recognized by the appropriate national body of another country). While a Master’s Degree in the field of library science and at least four years of experience teaching or working in grades 7-9 is preferred, we understand that not every great educator’s path to teaching is linear. We seek candidates who bring strong pedagogical skills, deep knowledge of the research process, and familiarity with academic databases and digital resources.
In addition, the candidate will demonstrate the following:
- A strong foundation in information literacy instruction and best practices.
- Expertise in selecting, acquiring, evaluating, and organizing diverse information resources across multiple formats.
- Commitment to the ethical and responsible use of information.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
- A passion for fostering inclusive, student-centered learning environments.
Salary: $69,000.00 – $101,701.00
BB&N offers competitive salaries and benefits, employing equitable and consistent compensation practices. The starting salary for any hired candidate is based on experience within salary bands.
