Manuscript Processing and Digitization Assistant, Peabody Essex Museum (Rowley, MA)

Description

The Peabody Essex Museum’s Phillips Library seeks a temporary, project-based Manuscript Processing and Digitization Assistant to aid in the photography of manuscript material from the Phillips Library’s collections. Digitized materials come from the Pingree Family Papers, a substantial archival collection of personal manuscripts and business records donated to the Phillips Library by the descendants of the Pingree Family of Salem, Massachusetts. The assistant will be responsible for photographing select materials according to established standards and local practices on our DT Versa and BC-100 systems. The assistant will also upload and create metadata for digitized files, as well as perform some digital preservation tasks.

Some library experience is desired. Special collections/rare books experience is a plus. Ability to work closely and collaboratively with diverse colleagues and patrons, as well as to work independently. Attention to detail, organizational skills, ability to multitask and balance priorities, and demonstrated communication skills. Familiarity with CaptureOne or similar photo editing software is preferred.

Requirements

A Bachelor’s degree is preferred with work towards an ALA-accredited degree in library/information science is a plus, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The abilities to use computing tools and to lift, carry, and position books and other materials weighing up to 15lbs. Library materials may be stored on shelves up to 12 feet high. Reliable transportation is required. 

Hours and Compensation

The hourly range for this role is $21.63 to $24.07 commensurate with experience. The position will work up to 19 hours per week and take place at PEM’s James B. and Mary Lou Hawkes Collection Center in Rowley, Massachusetts.
