Technology Librarian, Marion County Public Library System, (Ocala, FL)

Description

Responsible for performing high-level professional public library work, leading the library’s efforts to enhance virtual spaces and provide management of the integrated library system. Enriches library services by researching, evaluating and selecting electronic resources to expand and enhance the Library’s web presence. Plans and directs the provision of online information services to the public through the library’s website, public catalog and social networking, ensuring high quality, innovative online experiences for consumers. Responsible for addressing and resolving patron and staff inquiries regarding technological concerns, communicating in person, by telephone and virtually to determine the nature of concern and the appropriate resolution, including consulting with Marion County IT department. Participates in the selection, implementation, and maintenance of web- based library instruction tools, including developing and delivering training to library staff, county employees, elected officials and the general public. Responsible for providing excellent customer service to members of the general public, elected officials and county employees, serving as a role model for subordinate staff. Responsible for library operations in the absence of a library supervisor, division manager and/or higher-level staff. Maintains patron confidentiality and privacy in all library matters.

Responsibilities

  • Creates, updates and validates content that adheres to county and organizational standards for the library website, supporting the integration of applications that improve the user experience in discovering and accessing library resources. Works as a member of the Digital Services Team to develop high-level structures for content areas, adding and updating content. Systematically checks existing content on a regular basis and updates as needed. Develops and documents processes.
  • Oversees library digital display projects.
  • Coordinates development, organization and maintenance of library intranet content.
  • Serves as library staff liaison to County Information Systems for staff and patron computers and telephones. Serves as the point person for library technology related work orders.
  • Develops and prepares technology plans, Universal Service discount applications (E-rate) and other grants for technology resources and programs, with input and consultation from County
  • Information Systems, in the area of technology. Stays abreast of program changes and laws affecting Universal Service.
  • Works cooperatively with staff to provide virtual programming.
  • Provides leadership and expertise in improving and increasing Library offerings across a variety of
    devices.
  • Develops training modules for staff to increase skills in providing for the electronic informational, reading and reference needs to patrons of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Assists in managing library social media accounts and creating content for online and physical resources.
  • Evaluates the library’s database collection to identify areas in which additional materials are needed. Uses professionally-accepted, standard criteria to select materials and evaluate the collection. Stays abreast of developing trends in public librarianship, the provision of library services and in community and professional organizations. Maintains current and continuing professional expertise and knowledge of trends, tools and software pertinent to libraries, websites, social media, etc.
  • Recommends suitable websites for inclusion on library web page.
  • Troubleshoots library equipment. Diagnoses and reports equipment issues.
  • Assists in the preparation of the annual division budget, business plan, statistical reports, activity reports, etc.
  • Assists, directly or indirectly, with electronic informational and reading needs for patrons of all ages and backgrounds. Conducts reference interviews in person, by telephone, by mail and virtually to determine the nature of inquiry and the appropriate resources for locating information requested. Instructs patrons and staff on the use of the library online catalog, library databases, the Internet and library equipment.
  • Provides mentorship and feedback to staff and communicates with the division manager regarding staff successes, needs and competencies. May oversee the work of subordinate staff.
  • Actively participates in committee work.
  • Comprehends, follows and issues oral and written instructions and applies sound judgement when carrying out professional and essential duties.
  • Provides information and referral to facilitate customer access to other community resources, libraries and service agencies, as needed.
  • Maintains and promotes the characteristics of excellent customer service in assigned area of responsibility. Personal contact occurs with other employees of the unit, employees of other departments of the County, citizens and elected officials. Resolves customer concerns with a positive approach.
  • Implements the organization’s guiding principles and core values and carries out policies, procedures and established practices of the organization.
  • Works a flexible schedule which may include days, evenings and weekends, often assigned as the person in charge in the absence of supervisor or higher-level staff. May be assigned to work at other locations to meet service needs.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Master of Library Science (MLS/MLIS/MIS) degree with a focus on library studies from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited institution, with at least four (4) years post-master’s degree, professional librarian experience required. Public library experience and proficient use of current computer technologies in public library automation, undergraduate degree or certifications in Computer Sciences, Web Development or related field is preferred.

Possession of a valid State of Florida driver’s license.
