Reporting to the Dean of the CSUSB Libraries, the Student Success Librarian will coordinate library outreach and instruction efforts for first- and second-year students and transfer students. Working closely with the Outreach Librarian and Instruction Librarian, this person will promote library services, programs, and collections through external partnerships, program development, workshops, and targeted support. The Student Success Librarian will remain current with developments and trends in teaching, research, and learning that impact CSUSB students, such as AI tools, and will be proactive in incorporating such developments in instructional and programmatic library offerings.
The successful candidate will be expected to meet retention, promotion, and tenure standards for tenure-track library faculty in three areas: (1) professional assignments; (2) research, scholarly, or creative contributions; and (3) university and/or community service. The library provides support for and fosters intellectual endeavors. Librarians are valued as faculty with their own varied research interests which may not be limited to library science.
Applicants selected for in-person interviews will be reimbursed for any travel expenses they incur. Should the successful candidate need to relocate, moving expenses may be partially reimbursed.
Responsibilities
- Foster library partnerships with a variety of groups that support student retention and success, such as the various Student Success centers, identity focused groups, and other student-centered organizations, programs, and centers on campus
- Work closely with the Outreach Librarian to coordinate library representation at various orientation events (freshmen, transfer students, graduate students, and international students, etc.)
- Work closely with the Instruction Librarian to help develop, assess, and promote peer-led engagement services such as the Library Ambassadors program as well as increase capacity to provide instruction to lower-division courses
- Participate in library instruction program delivering sessions in-person, on Zoom, and through asynchronous LibGuides and videos. This includes providing instruction on-site at our satellite campus in Palm Desert as needed
- Design, develop, and deliver information literacy instruction sessions, workshops, and tutorials that prepare first-year, second-year, and transfer students to think critically, ethically engage with information, evaluate credibility, and responsibly use emerging technologies such as generative AI
- Design, develop, and assess LibGuides and other instructional resources related to student success
- Provide reference and research assistance in a variety of modalities such as in-person, Zoom, phone, chat, and email, including rotations in weekend and evening shifts as assigned
- Engage in collection development and liaison duties within assigned subject areas Engage in activities related to retention, promotion, and tenure
- Make periodic visits to our satellite campus in Palm Desert to provide library instruction or other programming, typically 1-2 times a month during Fall and Spring semesters
- Some additional evening and weekend work may be required, as well as possible attendance at offsite events
Qualifications
Required
- Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an American Library Association accredited program.
- Applicants nearing completion of the MLS degree may be considered; however, degree must be completed prior to the anticipated start date in Summer 2026.
- Coursework, robust knowledge of, or experience in outreach and student success activities
- Evidence of potential for a successful career in librarianship at an academic library that supports a diverse campus community
Preferred
- Familiarity with the various modes of instruction and reference services in a diverse academic setting
- Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively
- Demonstrated ability to teach information literacy concepts including those related to the appropriate use of AI in academic research
- Familiarity with outcomes assessment in higher education
Evidence of scholarly activity, publication, and innovation is valued. Evidence of exemplary graduate-level teaching and leadership experience at program level is preferred and should be noted in application.
Hours and Compensation
Full Time
Anticipated hiring annual salary range: $85,525 – $90,524
