Volunteer Literacy Library Cataloguer, RISE Early Literacy Tutoring Program, (Boston, MA)

Description

HopeWell’s RISE tutoring program provides professional, evidence-based early literacy tutoring to children who are or have been experiencing foster care. At our Roxbury office we have a collection of children’s literature and decodable texts which our tutors can use in their tutoring and which caregivers can use to support the development of their children’s reading skills. Right now, because it has not been catalogued and organized, the collection is under-utilized. We seek a volunteer who could help us organize our library so we can leverage it on behalf of the children we serve. The organizing approach developed in our Roxbury office could eventually be duplicated elsewhere as the program expands. For students who aspire to work as elementary school librarians, this project would be a way to gain experience organizing a book collection that’s analogous to an elementary school’s or an interventionists’ bookroom. A candidate for an elementary librarian position who could support faculty or school administrators to enhance the effectiveness of their literacy program by organizing their bookroom might be very interesting to a district or school hiring committee. We would welcome one volunteer, or several volunteers who would enjoy working as a team.

Responsibilities

  • Organize and label the book collection by topic area and by grade level/lexile level
  • Create an electronic catalogue of titles sortable by topic and level, with summary information about each title
  • Strengthen the organizing system we use to store and access our decodable texts
  • Establish a user-friendly system for book check-outs, returns that enables us to track the whereabouts of our resources
  • Assess the overall collection for strengths and gaps that should be filled
  • Make recommendations re: what titles should be re-purchased when RISE opens additional sites elsewhere in the state

Hours and Compensation

Schedule: The hours are as the volunteer is available.
