Description
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Research Library, located in the Washington, D.C. area, is seeking students pursuing degrees in library/information science or similar fields for paid, full-time internships for the period June 1 – August 7, 2026. The internships are being offered as part of the United States Department of Transportation’s Summer Internship Program (DOTSI). The internships include a stipend, round-trip travel, and furnished housing. The deadline for submitting an application is January 31, 2026.
Responsibilities
- Perform simple and complex cataloging for print and digital publications into a global catalog,
local system, and central repository. - Edit catalog and repository metadata to ensure accuracy and improved access to agency
publications. - Inventory documents in preparation for digitization.
- Assist with other cataloging, collection, and research activities as needed.
Qualifications
Coursework and/or experience in cataloging/metadata; Familiarity and/or experience with MARC, Dublin Core, RDA, and subject headings/authorities; Excellent communication, organizational, and analytical skills; Willingness to adapt to changing situations and take on new tasks; Ability to meet established deadlines with products that reflect professionalism.
Hours and Compensation
The internship is full-time between the dates of June 1-August 7, 2026. The internships include a stipend, round-trip travel, and furnished housing.
