Cataloging/Metadata Assistant Librarian Intern, Federal Highway Administration, (McLean, VA/Washington, DC)

Description

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Research Library, located in the Washington, D.C. area, is seeking students pursuing degrees in library/information science or similar fields for paid, full-time internships for the period June 1 – August 7, 2026. The internships are being offered as part of the United States Department of Transportation’s Summer Internship Program (DOTSI). The internships include a stipend, round-trip travel, and furnished housing. The deadline for submitting an application is January 31, 2026.

Responsibilities

  1. Perform simple and complex cataloging for print and digital publications into a global catalog,
    local system, and central repository.
  2. Edit catalog and repository metadata to ensure accuracy and improved access to agency
    publications.
  3. Inventory documents in preparation for digitization.
  4. Assist with other cataloging, collection, and research activities as needed.

Qualifications

Coursework and/or experience in cataloging/metadata; Familiarity and/or experience with MARC, Dublin Core, RDA, and subject headings/authorities; Excellent communication, organizational, and analytical skills; Willingness to adapt to changing situations and take on new tasks; Ability to meet established deadlines with products that reflect professionalism.

Hours and Compensation

The internship is full-time between the dates of June 1-August 7, 2026. The internships include a stipend, round-trip travel, and furnished housing.
