Description
Melrose Public Library is seeking a versatile, enthusiastic and people-loving individual to join our team with an adaptable, welcoming and positive outlook. Genuine enjoyment of children and families is essential! The Library is a fast paced, service driven environment. Under the supervision of the Department Head, Library Assistant employees perform a variety of paraprofessional duties to ensure the efficient workflow of basic library services, with a strong emphasis on friendly customer service. This position requires the ability to maintain a positive attitude, and an unflappable demeanor with a healthy dose of humor. Work is performed in accordance with established policies and accepted library practices and procedures.
Responsibilities
- Provides customer service including reader’s advisory and homework help with tact, courtesy, sensitivity and discretion in dealings with patrons of all ages. A strong commitment to excellent customer service and providing a welcoming environment is required.
- Accurately performs all aspects of library circulation work, including patron registration, material check-in and check-out, receiving fees, and placing holds.
- Understands and implements library policies and procedures, including those related to confidentiality of patron records, in accordance with Massachusetts General Laws, Trustees of Melrose Public Library, and NOBLE policy.
- Informs Supervisor of incidents/issues in a timely manner, assisting in resolution when appropriate.
- Performs clerical work for department as assigned.
- Assists in maintaining the library’s circulating collection in proper condition, selecting material for mending, replacing or discarding.
- Supports the mission of the public library in all activities.

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Must enjoy school aged patrons and be comfortable working with people of all ages and backgrounds.
- Ability to provide reliable attendance at work to ensure the smooth operation of busy public desks is essential.
- Must have flexibility to work substitute hours in addition to regular shifts.
- Demonstrated experience in providing excellent customer service to co-workers and patrons with tact, courtesy, sensitivity and discretion in a busy, sometimes hectic environment.
- Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality with patron records is essential.
- Ability to focus on multiple tasks/priorities with frequent, unscheduled interruptions.
- Excellent oral communication skills.
- Experience with automated library systems; familiarity with open source library systems (i.e. Evergreen) a plus.
- Ability to accept feedback and instruction from supervisor in a productive manner.
Hours and Compensation
Schedule: 6 hours per week in the Children’s department, plus variable substitute hours in the Children’s or Circulation departments. The regular schedule is Thursday 6pm – 8pm and Saturday 12pm – 4pm. This schedule may vary from time to time based on the needs of the library, and may include days, evenings or weekends. The library may not be open on Saturdays in July and August, however fill in shifts during the week are likely.
Salary: $23.78 – $23.78 per hour
