Job Description

The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribal Archives (MWTA) office shall has the responsibility of locating and preserving documentation pertaining to Mashpee and Wampanoag Tribal material culture, traditions, history, governance and lifeway. The Tribal Historic Preservation Department (THPD) administers the MWTA office and the Archival Technician will conduct research, collect information, and implement the Department’s policies concerning preservation of Wampanoag cultural materials; present a dedicated safe and secure space for historic records and items of cultural provenance to be preserved for future generations and stewarded by the collective Tribal body in perpetuity.

The THPD is seeking an individual to serve as the Archival Technician to continue the digitization of our archival material collections. The qualified person will work closely with the THPD director, a contract archivist (when necessary), external archival colleagues and archive related partners to expand the Tribe’s digitization of our material collections; while further developing our digital archives management processes and procedures.

MWTA serves as a vital resource and essential component to cultural transmission. The Archival Technician’s role in digitizing current holdings and entering metadata to create new digital records within the Archivespace and Preservica platforms relies on interfacing existing accession records, finding aids, and container list with focused attention to details.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Includes the following, while other duties and
responsibilities may be assigned.

  • Utilize the “Archives Space” platform and software to integrate this cataloging software to manage our material collections
  • Data entry to the Archives Space platform will include creating files, folders, box and container level records within the platform
  • Utilize the “Preservica” digital platform to further develop digital content derived from our material collections
  • This work will be completed in close consultation with and under the guidance of the Tribal Historic Preservation Officer/Director and with support and direction from the Tribal Historic Preservation Commission
  • Digitization of our Tribal Archives relies on consistent workflows related to data entry while adding new items and collections to the Archives Space and Preservica platforms
  • Regularly attend and participate in Archives Space and Preservica training sessions; working independently to complete recorded tutorials, readings, and demonstrations
  • Further set up the authoritative institution for Mashpee Wampanoag historical research relating to literature, scholarly works, manuscripts, records, other unique and rare items.
  • Apply best practices for data management and digital preservation for all deposited content
  • Define Records Management functions to address “Records Retention and Disposition Scheduling” implement standards, policies, procedures involved in the management of all Tribal records
  • Meet regularly with the THPO or designee to address questions, ensure project timelines are met, troubleshoot challenges as they arise, provide bi-weekly updates and fully utilize available project management tools effectively; attend THPD Staff meetings
  • Completes work assignments in a timely and efficient manner, paying close attention to details; articulate and recommend professional development needs effectively and timely
  • Compile and maintain accurate records of activities and expenditures for grant and quarterly reports
  • Develop meaningful relationships with other off-site repositories in the Commonwealth, in New England, and beyond in order to acquire access to primary source collections relating to Mashpee Wampanoag history, culture, and language
  • Cultivate a “Community of Practice” & an Ethic of collecting within the Tribal community revolving around the concepts, strategies, techniques, and critical thinking involved in Archival Science
  • Work with other department staff professionally, collaboratively and timely at all times

Education and Experience: Minimum qualifications: This position requires a high-school diploma, the ideal candidate would have some level of college education related to a library or information science program, concentration in archival studies would be preferable; and exhibit a general interest in history, preservation, research or equivalent Humanities related fields. Candidate should have processing experience; experience with multi-format collections, including experience with audiovisual and photographic materials. Able to proficiently use Microsoft Office suite programs such as Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint (minimally and independently).

Language Ability: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, create short correspondence, and memos; and demonstrate the ability to write professional or collegiate-level correspondence.

Math Ability: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Certificates and Licenses: Must possess and maintain an active/valid driver’s license.

Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. This position may be a hybrid position; minimally it requires being physically present in the office three of the five days. The Tribe operates on a thirty-five-hour work week. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is required to talk or hear. Ability to routinely lift 40 lbs. boxes, pushing and pulling. A full record carton weighs approx. 40 lbs.

Additional Requirements: Able to work in the archival climate-controlled environment; which is kept below 60 degrees in compliance with Archival standard specifications.
