Job Description
The YA Librarian provides support to the library director in planning, implementing, and managing library services overall with a particular focus on services to teens. This position performs work responsibilities under the general direction of a library director, who furnishes general work goals and objectives, as well as policy direction. Incumbent performs day-to-day tasks with a high degree of independence, but may bring unusual situations to the attention of superior for resolution. Written and oral guidance materials are provided and must be observed and followed, but incumbent must use professional judgment in individual situations serving the public.
Essential Functions

- Develops, manages, and promotes library collections for Young Adults.
- Designs and implements original programs as well as contracts with outside performers and presenters to provide a robust and varied schedule of library programming for patrons ages 11 to 18 years.
- Creates flyers, social media posts, and other promotional materials for Young Adult library services.
- Acts as liaison between the library and Stoughton Middle and High Schools in cooperation with the Outreach Coordinator.
- Provides information and assistance to library patrons with a particular responsibility for patrons 11 to 18 years of age.
- Manages work of teen volunteers.
- Creates and analyzes reports on Young Adult library services.
- Performs similar or related duties as required.
Recommended Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
Master’s Degree in Library Science required. Some professional experience working with children or young adults strongly preferred.
Librarian Certificate from the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge.
- Familiarity with standard library policies and procedures.
- Knowledge and experience with library services, particularly for young adults aged eleven (11) to eighteen (18) years old.
- Working knowledge of general library management concepts.
- Knowledge of automation systems and other technologies for library administrative and services.
- Knowledge of computer software programs, such as MS Word and Excel.
Skills.
- Strong planning and organization skills.
- Detail oriented.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and in writing.
- Excellent customer service skills, particularly with young adults.
- Skill with Internet, computer, and social media applications.
Abilities.
- Interact especially well with young adults.
- Able to multi-task and handle a great many details simultaneously and with accuracy.
- Implement goals and provide leadership.
- Prepare and analyze data.
- Able to speak in public effectively.
Job Environment
Work at this level involves a variety of specialized work tasks. Staff and users looking for particular information often interrupt work and incumbent must be able to return to complete work already initiated with a minimum of lost time. Work involves a host of details to monitor and manage. While guidance materials are available, incumbent must rely on previous training, experience and good judgment to maintain level of service.

End date: February 28, 2026
Schedule: 25 hours per week
- Monday 4pm-9pm
- Tuesday–Friday 12pm-5pm
- Alternating Saturdays 9am-2pm
Pay Rate: $20.75 – $24.00 per hour, based on experience
