Art Engagement Librarian, Curtis Memorial Library, (Brunswick, Maine)

The Art Engagement Librarian develops, curates, and promotes the library’s art collection and related programming. This position combines collection management, exhibit coordination, and community engagement to celebrate creativity and connect Library patrons with visual arts. The Art Engagement Librarian collaborates with staff, artists, and community partners to make art accessible and meaningful within the Curtis Library setting. This person will also oversee and manage art installations in the Morrell Meeting Room, the Silverman Gallery, and the Creative Hive (the creation space within Curtis Memorial Library).This position also works as a member of the Adult Services team to work at multiple service points in traditional librarian roles.

Responsibilities

  • Art Curation, and Promotion
    • Member of the Library’s Community Art Team, working to solicit, select, and manage new art for the Curtis art collection
    • Responsible for ensuring the Curtis Library Art Collection reflects community history, current trends, and diverse voices
    • Markets the collection on an ongoing basis to build community awareness
  • Exhibit Management
    • Plans, installs, and manages rotating art exhibits within the library, including the Morrell Meeting Room, Silverman Gallery on 1st floor, the mezzanine display, and the 1904 Building as well as occasional library-wide exhibits
      • Works with Development Manager to build relationships with potential art
        donors and to maintain connections with existing art donors
    • Develops interpretive materials and exhibit labels to enhance visitor engagement
    • Develops and maintains patron self-guided tours of the Library’s art collection.
    • Oversees exhibit calendar and works with artists and staff to ensure smooth installation and de-installation processes
  • Programming & Engagement
    • Designs and leads art-related programs, workshops, and lectures for community members (e.g., art appreciation, hands-on creative sessions, artist talks, Creative Hive)
    • Manages the Creative Hive, regularly evaluates its relevance to and use by the community
    • Collaborates with local artists, schools, museums, and community organizations to create engaging cultural experiences
    • Builds community exposure to and understanding of the library’s maritime collection and its newer additions
    • Promotes art resources and programs through displays, social media, and outreach events
  • Art and Architecture Collection Management
    • Selects, purchases, and maintains books (and other formats) related to the visual arts, art history, design, and creative practices (Dewey 700’s)
    • Maintains understanding of digital trends around art collections and ensures the Library is providing appropriate resources in this area
  • Customer Service & Readers’ Advisory
    • Provides welcoming, inclusive service to patrons in person, by phone, and online
    • Assists with checkouts, returns, account issues, and library card registration
    • Promote library services, programs, and digital resources during patron interactions
    • Offers personalized readers’ advisory and help patrons navigate collections
    • Support use of self-check stations, public computers, and other library technology
    • Provide research and reference assistance to patrons
    • Catalog, classify or organize resources

Qualifications

  • Required:
    • Master’s degree in Library & Information Science from an ALA accredited program
    • BA in studio art or art history or comparable professional experience in the visual arts
  • Preferred:
    • 3+ years of professional public library experience

Hours and Compensation

Curtis Library Work Environment and Schedule:

35 hours per week; includes evenings and weekends as scheduled

  • Work is performed in a library setting with frequent interaction with the public
  • Must be able to hear and communicate effectively in a busy, often noisy environment
  • Requires extended periods of standing and use of computers
  • Must be able to lift to 20 lbs and perform bending, pushing, and kneeling as needed for shelving and materials handling

Salary Range: Depends on education and experience, $52,400 to $56,765
