MIT Libraries’ Department of Distinctive Collections (DDC) is seeking candidates for a part-time Public Services Assistant. The primary responsibilities of this position include serving at the reference desk in the Distinctive Collections Reading Room alongside a full-time staff member, providing information to and answering questions from researchers, circulating Distinctive Collections materials, and assisting with reference questions from remote patrons. Other tasks may include aiding in projects to improve access to collections, scanning archival materials, and helping set up or clean up class instruction sessions and events.
Qualifications:
Currently enrolled or recent graduate of a graduate degree program in Library and Information
Science, Archival Management or a related field. Preferred: Prior experience with customer
service or library public services. Strong communication skills and attention to detail. Interest in gaining familiarity with library and archives software including Aeon, ArchivesSpace, and SpringShare (LibAnswers).
Hours and Compensation:
The majority of working hours should take place Mondays through Thursdays between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm. Work is primarily onsite at MIT. Minimum weekly hours = 10. Maximum weekly hours = 30. Open to hiring two candidates who can split 30 hours weekly. Compensation = $18/hour. Not eligible for benefits. Position not to exceed one year from start date.
