The Humanities & Social Sciences Librarian serves on a team of liaison librarians supporting student and faculty research in the humanities and social sciences. They serve as an active partner in educating students in academic research best practices and the ethical and effective use of information and research tools. They build relationships with academic departments and campus units to build and promote library services that best meet the needs of the College community.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Maintain knowledge of humanities and social science scholarship and relevant research tools to support student and faculty research in assigned areas including but not limited to History and American Studies.
  • Build strong relationships with students, faculty, and staff in assigned areas proactively communicating about relevant resources and tools and promoting library resources, programs, and services.
  • Design, deliver, and assess workshops and course-based information literacy instruction in assigned disciplines as well as participate in general library instruction and orientation activities.
  • Guide students via consultations in learning academic research practices including effective search of digital, print, and primary sources; evaluation and citation of sources; and ethical use of new technologies such as artificial intelligence. The librarian in this position will collaborate with our Special Collections team to instruct students in finding and using primary sources.
  • Answer research questions from faculty, staff, and students via chat, email, and in-person requests.
  • Collaborate with the Collections team to help analyze the research needs of humanities and social science faculty and students to contribute to decisions about library collections.
  • Develop and maintain engaging and effective instruction materials in a range of formats including research guides and interactive tutorials.
  • Contribute knowledge and creativity to the library, the College, and the profession by supporting principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion, working cooperatively, participating in campus initiatives, and engaging in scholarly and professional service activities.

Requirements

  • Graduate degree in library or information science from an accredited institution, or its equivalent, required.
  • 1-3 years of experience working in a library or higher education setting, required.
  • Learner-centered teaching skills and outstanding oral and written communication skills, required.
  • Technical aptitude, including proficiency with research tools, communication tools, and citation tools, along with a willingness to develop new competencies, required.
  • Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills, including the ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment, a passion for providing empathetic research support, a strong sense of accountability, and excellent attention to detail, required.
  • Additional master’s degree in a humanities field preferred but not required.
  • Knowledge of government documents preferred but not required.
  • Foreign language skills preferred but not required.

Hours and Compensation:

This is a full-time, benefits eligible, salaried position with a hiring range of $65,165 – $81,466 per year. The anticipated start date for this position is January 2026.
