Darien Library seeks a meticulous and collaborative Copy Cataloger to support the Materials Management Department on a temporary, part-time basis. Reporting to the Head of Materials Management, the Copy Cataloger will process and enhance bibliographic records for a wide variety of library materials. This position plays a key role in ensuring that resources are accurately described and discoverable, directly supporting the Library’s mission to provide exceptional service and accessibility to the community.
Responsibilities
- Import, verify, and edit bibliographic records using OCLC WorldShare and the Library’s Integrated Library System (ILS).
- Apply MARC and other cataloging standards to ensure consistency and accuracy across records.
- Create and revise records to reflect best practices and classification systems.
- Resolve cataloging discrepancies and maintain data integrity within the Library’s ILS (Polaris).
- Processing of physical materials, including covering books and applying and pairing barcodes and RFID tags.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree required.
- ·Working knowledge of MARC records, OCLC WorldShare, and Polaris or other Integrated Library Systems is required; experience is strongly preferred.
Skills & Attributes
- Functional knowledge of public library organizations and collections. Good working knowledge of principles and procedures of professional library work including methods, practices, and techniques of library cataloging and classification.
- Proficiency with Integrated Library Systems, including Polaris and Sierra.
- Experience with Machine Readable Cataloging (MARC) records, Library of Congress Subject Headings, Dewey Decimal Classification, and OCLC Worldshare.
- Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.
- Strong Microsoft Office skills, especially Excel and Word.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Physical Requirements
- Essential job duties and responsibilities include remaining in a stationary position for extended periods, the ability to regularly lift and transport objects (such as boxes of books) up to 50 lbs.,

Hours and Compensation
Schedule
This is a part-time, temporary position for an average of 10-12 hours per week, preferably on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, not to exceed 29 hours per week. This assignment will last approximately six months, with the possibility of extension pending budgetary approval. This schedule is for planning purposes only. Actual hours may vary and are subject to modification due to staffing needs, programming, or other operational demands of the Library.
Salary
$20-$29.50 an hour, commensurate with experience and CLA minimum requirements.
