Job Description
The Thompson Public Library is seeking a community-oriented, intelligent, customer-service focused, creative, professional, and technologically capable individual to lead the library team. The Library Director is a Librarian responsible for the administration and supervision of the Library and the provision of library services including programming, collection development, and building maintenance. The Library Director is also responsible for fostering community partnerships and maintaining a professional relationship with the Town of Thompson government. The Director coordinates with the Connecticut State Library and participates in the regional library community of Connecticut. Employee is required to perform all similar or related duties. The Library Director reports directly to the Thompson Public Library Board of Trustees and keeps the Selectmen’s Office informed as appropriate.
Compensation:
This full-time position has a starting annual salary between $60,000 – $70,000, depending on qualifications, with full benefits.
General Responsibilities and Duties:
- A friendly, helpful attitude and use of tact and diplomacy when dealing with patrons.
- Implement library services and provide leadership to library staff.
- Promote and maintain a positive environment not only for patrons but also the staff.
- Oversee budgeting, planning, and policy development in collaboration with the Library Board of Trustees.
- Maintain high visibility within the library, engaging with staff, assisting patrons, and modeling excellence in public service.
- Work with the Friends of the Thompson Public Library on events, fundraisers, and implementing new services and resources.
- Recommend and administer personnel policies as approved by the Library Trustees.
- Recommend appointments, transfers, and dismissals.
- Determine staff schedules, make staff assignments, assess, and evaluate work performance, and recommend salaries.
- Maintain Library Certification and eligibility for participation in CT State Aid to Public Libraries.
- Report problems and recommend repairs concerning maintenance of building and grounds to the Library Trustees.
- Oversee preventative maintenance and schedule inspections for the Library Community Center.
- Represent the Library at community and professional meetings.
- Select materials for inclusion in and withdrawal from collection.
- Prepare monthly reports and annual evaluations of services.
- Manage and track expenditures of the library budget.
- Prepare grant applications and seek funding for library programs, services, and operational and improvement programs.
- Meet with patrons, Friends of the Library, library colleagues, Library Trustees, and organizations in support of library services and operations.
- Other duties assigned by the Board of Trustees, as the need arises.
Required Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution.
- Progressively responsible library experience, including at least 1 year in a supervisory, managerial, or administrative role.
- Proven leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Strong commitment to public service, intellectual freedom, and community engagement.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with government officials, staff, and the public.
- Willingness to learn new technology.
- Familiarity with technology and computers.
- Familiarity with managing social media.
- Experience with an integrated library system such as Koha, LS2, or Ex Libris; familiarity with Evergreen a plus.
- Computer skills, including Microsoft office, the ability to learn the online circulation system, fax machine, photocopier, printer, scanner, and laminator.
- Experience with online programs such as Gmail/Google Docs., Yahoo email, and Microsoft 365

Preferred Qualifications:
- Three or more years of experience working in a library or education related environment
- Experience with 3D printing technology and software
- Experience with Cricut vinyl cutter technology
- Experience with online programs such as Canva, LibGuides, OCLC/Worldcat, and other related systems
- Familiarity with the Bibliomation library consortium
