Reference and Technology Librarian, Hamilton-Wenham Public Library (Hamilton, MA)

Job Description:

The Reference & Technology Librarian has responsibility for services and outreach related to technology and reference services to the public and staff. Manages the library’s public and staff computers in cooperation with a contract IT company and the Library Director. Serves as liaison to the Merrimack Valley Library Consortium’s technology department and user group. Assesses current equipment and makes recommendations for replacements and enhancements. Maintains active technology equipment inventory. Performs regular computer updates, monitors the print management system, and troubleshoots technology issues.

Provides reference, reader’s advisory and information services on-site, online and by telephone, following standard principles and practices and the policies of the library. Handles reserve requests and interlibrary loan requests via the local catalog, ComCat, and out of state. Responsible for assisting patrons and staff with technology instruction and implementing new technologies and resources as needed.· Plans and organizes topical programs relating to computers, library databases and emerging technologies for adults. Organizes and provides one-on-one patron technology appointments. Provides coverage primarily for the Reference Desk but may include Circulation Desk and/or Children’s Desk coverage as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Masters of Library Science degree from an ALA accredited university or MLS enrolled student with previous library experience
  • Knowledge of computer operating systems, LAN systems, hardware, software and peripheral components essential
  • Knowledge of current and emerging library technology, trends, and practices
  • Ability to teach and problem solve across a wide range of technologies including computers, desktop publishing equipment, office equipment, automated library equipment 
  • Ability to function well as part of a team that supports the overall goals of the library
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing

AFSCME Union Position – 35 hours per week – includes one evening a week and every third Saturday
