Reading Public Library (MA) (Full-time / Salary: $31.67 – $33.17 Hourly)
Due to a promotion, the Reading Public Library seeks an enthusiastic and flexible Librarian to focus on reference services and specialized programming for adults aged 55+. In this role, you will be responsible for creating an inclusive library experience for older adult patrons while providing exceptional reference and research support to all library users.
You will plan and implement engaging programming tailored to adults aged 55+, provide comprehensive reference and readers’ advisory services, curate specialized collections including large print materials, and coordinate community outreach to connect with older adults throughout Reading. We are looking for a self-starter with strong communication, organizational, and analytical skills. The ability to build collaborative relationships with senior community organizations, healthcare providers, and social services is also essential.
Essential Functions
- Direct User Services: Provides direct assistance to library users with a focus on adults aged 55+, while also supporting services to adult and teens as needed. Library services include reference, research, reader’s advisory, and instruction in the use of materials, equipment, and technology.
- Community Outreach: Plans and implements community outreach in collaboration with the Public Services Division Head, Assistant Library Director, and various town departments. This includes bringing library resources and events beyond the building to targeted segments of the population.
- Adult Programming: Plans, publicizes, and implements library programs for the public with a focus on adults aged 55+.
- Collection Management: Curates and manages the library’s large print collections and other collections as assigned.
- Team Collaboration: Cooperates as a team member by providing customer service and general assistance at various public service desks.
- External Collaboration: Works collaboratively to support town departments, businesses, community groups, and other organizations outside the library.
- Public Relations Support: Supports the library’s public relations efforts through activities including contributing to social media and website content, developing promotional materials, and creating displays.
- Data-Driven Service Improvement: Proactively uses data, current resources, and critical analysis to continuously inform and improve all aspects of library services.
- Policy Enforcement: Stays current on library and network policies and procedures. Informs library users of and enforces library policies.
- Grant Management: As needed, prepares grant applications and oversees awarded grants.
- Confidential Information Access: Maintains access to and handles confidential information appropriately.
Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in any subject;
- Master’s Degree in Library Science preferred. Candidates in a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science program will be considered; and
- One to two years of professional library experience; or
- Any equivalent combination of education and progressively responsible experience, with additional work experience substituting for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
