Job Description

UNCW Library at the University of North Carolina Wilmington seeks an Information Literacy Librarian to promote information literacy knowledge and skills by developing information literacy instructional materials; engaging with faculty, staff, and students in First Year Seminar, Transfer Seminar, English Composition, and the Honors College; and providing training on information literacy concepts to library and UNCW faculty and staff. This is an 11-month (July-May) non-tenure track,  fixed-term faculty position reporting to the Associate Director of Academic & Research Engagement. Final salary for the selected candidate will be commensurate with the candidate’s experience, qualifications, and preparation for success in the position.

The Information Literacy Librarian is part of the UNCW Library’s Academic & Research Engagement (ARE) division, which collaborates with faculty, staff, and students in UNCW academic units to provide information literacy instruction, assist with research, develop the library collection, provide consultative services supporting research and scholarly communication, and partner on programming, in alignment with the information and research needs of campus stakeholders. Library faculty in this division proactively engage with campus constituents to promote the use of library services, facilities, materials, and expertise.

Upon initial appointment, this position will:

  • Act as liaison to the Center for Academic Advising, English Composition, and the Honors College 
  • Develop and assist in delivering and assessing information literacy instruction for the core curriculum (First Year Seminar, Transfer Seminar, and English Composition)
  • Collaborate with the Director of University Studies, the University Studies Advisory Committee, and liaison librarians to align recommended information literacy concepts with practices at UNCW
  • Provide training on information literacy concepts to library and UNCW faculty and staff

Library faculty in the ARE division generally have the following responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with faculty and instructors to create, provide, and assess information literacy instruction for courses where information literacy skills are in development
  • Provide research and scholarly consultative services to faculty, instructors, staff, graduate students, and undergraduate students in areas of focus
  • Ensure that the library’s collections adequately support curricular and research needs of students, faculty, and staff in areas of focus
  • Engage with students, faculty, and staff, including collaborative programming such as workshops, panel discussions, fellows’ programs, and exhibits

As a library faculty member, this position will:

  • Provide research help during scheduled Library Help Desk and/or virtual reference shifts, providing individual research assistance in person, by phone, email, and chat 
  • Support the mission and strategic plan of the UNCW Library and engage and participate in library-wide meetings, committees, and decision-making
  • Participate in university and professional activities, such as research, conference presentations, publications, service, or other evidence of scholarly activity. The UNCW Library is committed to supporting professional development through time, funding, and mentorship
  • Keep current with developments in librarianship, particularly in areas related to Academic & Research Engagement

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • ALA-accredited master’s degree in library and information sciences

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Demonstrated knowledge of core and emerging practices, standards, and trends in information literacy in an academic environment
  • Ability to learn, and/or experience with, the creation of asynchronous online learning objects using appropriate instructional technologies
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment with a diverse population of faculty, staff, students, and colleagues
  • Effective interpersonal, oral, written, and virtual communication skills using a variety of media and technologies

Special Notes to Applicants

The candidate(s) selected for hire need a verification of their highest degree within the first 90 days of hiring. However, if teaching a four credit course the candidate(s) must be able to demonstrate eligibility to teach assigned courses by successfully meeting the credentialing requirements based on official transcripts and other documentation as required.
