Part Time Library Circulation Assistant, Deerfield Academy, (Deerfield, MA)

Description

Reporting to the Library Director and collaborating with the full Library Staff, the Library Circulation Assistant serves as a main point of contact for Library users; provides circulation services; troubleshoots minor technology issues; and contributes maintenance and enhancements to catalog records.

This is a part-time position, evenings and weekends are required

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a welcoming and professional main point of contact for Library users; provide circulation services and troubleshoot minor technology issues in person, over the phone, and through email and other technology-based systems.
  • Develop collaborative partnerships with Library staff, the Deerfield Academy community, and others to proactively identify and recommend resources, strategies and procedures that improve the ability of the Deerfield Academy community to accomplish its goals
  • Monitor usage of the building, making occasional rounds, and serve as a visible presence in the physical spaces. Assist with the appropriate supervision and mentoring of students
  • Stay up to date on best practices, professional and technology standards, license, regulatory requirements, and Deerfield Academy policies and procedures to provide consistent and current practices
  • Contribute to a continuous process of assessment to ensure the library’s success in advancing Deerfield Academy’s evolving goals considering pedagogical, information, technology, and user preference changes
  • Assist with collection development, materials processing, cataloging, shelving, special projects, and perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma required. Associate’s degree preferred
  • 1 – 3 years’ library or equivalent experience required. 
  • Experience in an educational environment preferred.
  • Strong desire to work with teenage students
  • Ability and willingness to work evening and weekend hours
  • Strong background in library research.
  • Ability to instruct and train students and faculty
  • A demonstrated respect and appreciation for patrons of all ages
  • Ability to exercise tact, leadership, and independent judgment
  • Willingness to innovate and adopt new practices and procedures
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to work at a very high rate of accuracy
  • Proficiency with modern workplace technologies, including research databases and cloud-based applications.

The frequent and essential physical activities of this position include: reaching, standing, lifting up to 20 lbs., maintaining manual dexterity, sitting, grasping, ability to move about and traverse 400 feet, pushing and pulling wheeled carts weighing 60 lbs., talking, hearing, and carrying/transferring of library materials. Regular stooping and crouching are required.

The position requires close visual acuity to view computer screens and equipment, review data and figures, read, visual inspection of library materials and equipment, operate library systems and equipment, and determine the accuracy and thoroughness of the work assigned.

Hours and Compensation

This is a part-time position, evenings and weekends are required.
