Digital Navigator Internship, Sawyer Free Library, (Gloucester, MA)

In support of the new Digital Learning Lab, Sawyer Free Library is looking to hire a Digital Navigator for the inaugural Computer Basics Course. The Digital Navigator Intern will be instrumental in outreach and recruitment for the inaugural Computer Basics course, mentoring high school students to serve as Digital Tutor interns, and working with community members in internet adoption and use of computing devices and applications. The Computer Basics Course consists of 15 hours of self-paced, skill-building, hands-on digital training and offers an incentive of a free Chromebook and a year’s Internet service plan to qualified adults. The Digital Navigator Intern will gain valuable hands-on work experience while making a difference in closing the digital divide in Gloucester.

Responsibilities

  • Make connections with community groups who represent target populations and share
    information about the Computer Basics Course and the importance of digital literacy
    skills
  • Follow up with potential participants who contact the Library about the Computer
    Basics Course by phone or email and provide information about the Computer Basics
    Course
  • Mentor high school interns to provide tutoring to course participants on Chromebook
    device and Internet configuration; use of Google platform, docs and spreadsheets;
    online navigation and safety; and email and telecommunication
  • Assist with signing up and scheduling participants to complete the course
  • Facilitate drop-in course sessions, pairing high school interns with course participants
  • Provide basic device and application support
  • Document participant engagement and progress with increased skill proficiency,
    milestone accomplishments and confidence
  • On completion of the course, help course participants to set educational or career goals

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED/equivalent
  • Enrollment in a higher education degree program or vocational program
  • One year experience in mentoring/tutoring students and/or adults in digital learning
  • Computer proficiency, including experience with Chromebooks, email and internet
  • Ability to work evenings and Saturdays
  • Professional communication skills
  • Enthusiastic and able to work well with diverse individuals and groups
  • Ability to work well independently and with minimal supervision
  • Education or experience in the fields of computers, digital literacy, education,
  • librarianship, psychology or social work
  • Interest in making a difference in our community

Bi/Multilingual skills are a plus (Spanish, Haitian Creole, Portuguese)

Hours and Compensation

Duration: September 1 – December 12 2025
Up to 16 hours per week, with exact schedule to be determined.
Compensation: $20/hr

Letter of recommendation upon successful internship completion
