Job Description

The Oliver Wendell Holmes Library (OWHL) at Phillips Academy seeks a collaborative, forward-thinking Head of Instruction to lead its Instructional Services (IS) team and advance the library’s instructional mission. This role provides leadership and vision for the development, integration, and assessment of information literacy initiatives that support Phillips Academy’s (PA) curriculum and student learning outcomes.

Reporting to the Library Director, the Head of Instruction collaborates closely with department chairs and administrators on strategic planning, policy and collection development, and budget allocation. The role also includes serving as a liaison to academic departments—providing instruction, supporting research needs, and ensuring alignment between library services and curricular goals.

This position is 40 hours per week  (1.0 FTE), works during the Summer Session at PA, and is classified as staff.  This position does not include on-campus housing.

Schedule: Primarily Monday through Friday with one evening shift (1:30 PM–9:30 PM) per week; occasional evenings and weekends will be required for events and programs.

The successful candidate will:

  • Lead the design, implementation, and evaluation of the library’s instructional programs, ensuring alignment with current and future academic needs.
  • Provide strategic leadership and communication to coordinate instructional efforts across the library team.
  • Set instructional priorities and implement them across all modes of delivery, including the integration of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI).
  • Design and facilitate workshops on AI literacy, promoting digital fluency, academic integrity, and equitable access.
  • Identify and recommend AI-related resources—tools, databases, and guides—that align with school values and support inclusive student learning.
  • Mentor instructional librarians, fostering a supportive team environment that encourages innovation, collaboration, and professional growth.
  • Perform all duties and responsibilities at the Welcome Desk, including providing reference and research consultation services.
  • Promote equity, diversity, and inclusion across instruction, outreach, and collection development.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Library Director.

Required Qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited school and/or Master’s Degree in Education (MEd)
  • Minimum of three years’ experience in reference, instruction, research support, and collection development
  • Proven leadership and team management skills, including mentoring, evaluation, and performance development
  • Demonstrated experience incorporating emerging technologies—especially AI—into instruction or library services
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; able to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic environment
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in education and library practice
  • In exceptional instances, specialized education, training, and/or experience may be substituted for part of the required elements.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with teens and an understanding of their interests and developmental needs
  • Familiarity with Evergreen ILS and SpringShare products
