Job Description
Join a great team of librarians, in a beautiful library building, on a vibrant campus dedicated to our new president’s mission of reimagining excellence. This temporary position, set for six months with the possibility of a six-month extension, assumes responsibility for acquisition guidelines designed to effectively secure resources for the Harrison Libraries through a variety of national and international vendors; also performs the cataloging and metadata services required for those resources. The Harrison Libraries are comprised of the Allen Library (music, theatre, dance) and the Mortensen Library (all other disciplines). Experience with Ex Libris’ Alma is a plus.
Position Duties
- Maintains and monitors all acquisitions funds and budgets, allocating appropriate funds to area selectors within the Harrison Libraries. Oversees acquisition activities in collaboration with the Head of Technical Services and Resource Management to support timely receipt of materials and proper invoicing of all purchased items.
- Performs cataloging services for all Mortensen subjects. Maintains and monitors system-wide cataloging and related procedures in coordination with both the Head of Technical Services and Resource Management and Allen Library’s Technical Services Librarian. Consults with colleagues on improving cataloging processes.
- Facilitates the processing of donated items. Updates and copy catalogs new and donated materials, bibliographic records and associated online utilities to accurately reflect the Libraries’ inventory. Develops, implements and maintains records and processes relating to acquisitions for both Mortensen and Allen Music Libraries including, but not limited to, monograph (paper and electronic), databases, standing orders and serials.
- Assists in the training and oversight of student library assistants in the processing of materials.
- Serving as a member of the Collection Development Committee, collaborates on adjusting and allotting material budgets based on need and availability, demonstrating prudent fiscal management at all times. Reports on expenditures as necessary and/or deemed appropriate.
- Maintains awareness of trends and advances in cataloging and metadata through appropriate professional development.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Represents the Harrison Libraries on various internal and external committees as necessary and/or appropriate.
Qualifications
- Can lift or carry 26-50 lbs.
- Bachelor’s Degree Required; MLIS preferred
- Work experience: 1 years < 3 years
Hours & Compensation
- 40 hours a week in West Hartford, CT, with some flexibility for remote work once a week
- $25/hour
