Description
Historical & Special Collections (HSC) at the Harvard Law School Library has an opening for one 14-hour per week onsite position beginning in July 2025. The person in this role will primarily assist with description and rehousing of archival collections to help make them discoverable and accessible. They will also assist with preparing collections for digital imaging and other departmental duties as assigned. The Archives & Special Collections Assistant will report to the Collection Services Archivist and work in close collaboration with other HSC and library staff.
Responsibilities
- Assist with description and rehousing of archival collections, including entering data into spreadsheets, ArchivesSpace, Alma, and Aeon
- Prepare collections for digital imaging, including removing staples, unfolding documents, and flagging specific materials
Additional duties may include:
- Staff the HSC reading room desk up to two hours per week
- Finding aid cleanup in ArchivesSpace and/or XML
- Assist with post-scanning appraisal of digitized materials
- Retrieve and return materials to the HLS loading dock
- Assist with other departmental projects and duties as assigned
Qualifications
This position requires an MLS (archives concentration preferred) completed or in progress. Preference will be given to applicants with processing experience (internship experience qualifies), experience working with ArchivesSpace, knowledge of EAD, an interest in digitization workflows and digital collections, and experience handling special collections materials. We seek an individual possessing careful attention to detail, clear communication, flexibility, and proficiency and enjoyment working independently and in teams.
Hours and Compensation
Hours and Duration: This is a part-time, temporary non-benefited position, 14 hours per week Monday-Friday 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., through June 2026, with the possibility for an extension contingent upon continued funding.
Pay: $20.00 / hour
